[history]
March 1 issue - My son sits tensely on the couch watching the nightly television news while words are spoken that no 17-year-old child should hear: "Because of heightened security concerns, the terrorism alert has been raised to Orange level ... Another suicide bombing has been reported in Iraq. There are an unknown number of civilian casualties ... Next up, a special report on whether hazmat suits really protect against anthrax ..." All the while scrolled messages roll out beneath the news anchorpredictions of a recession, a canceled flight from London, street violence in Haiti.
I sit and watch the news with my son. At his age, he needs to know what is going on in the world, but the continual litany of sorrow and fear that is now part of the very fabric of our daily lives is almost too much to bear. I wish for a moment that I could just flip off the television like I would when he was a little boy, and say, "Hey, let's go to the park!"
I am surprised to find that in addition to all the other emotions brought on first by the terrorist attacks, and then by the war in the Middle East, I can now add parental guilt to the mix.

People who refuse to defend themselves and then DEMAND that others put their lives on the line for them really disgust me.

We may feel a collective guilt and responsibility over the turn history has taken...No I don't.

But not enough guilt to take responsibility and then make things right, apparently.

Heaven forbid the day her widdle baby brings home a potential wife. Run, girls, run far away!

One can only wonder what sort of complete psychosis this woman would have entered had she had to raise her kid during the 1980s. Can you imagine her meltdown if she were to discover her son had ever spent a moment discussing that bad TV movie "The Day After" with his classmates?

Oh, oh! Waving hand wildly. What's the prize for guessing she's voting for Kerry to set things right with the world?

The son would SHOOT himself in the foot just to avoid defending his country? Ship that loser off to France, where he can mingle with like cowards.
I would be ashamed of any son of mine that expressed similar sentiments.

This woman was the same type who was wringing her hands in the 80s over Reagan, and demanding that American unilaterally disarm. Or marching in the 60s against the Vietnam War. Or screeching against the blacklist in the 50s.
To: Servant of the 9
If I had called my 17 yo son a child he would have been totally humiliated. He knew of the horrors of the world and war and life long before 17 years of age. This is amazing that this woman has been so overly protective of her "child". Excuse me... I think I am getting nauseated.

I would be ashamed of any son of mine that expressed similar sentiments. I would be ashamed of any son of mine who couldn't understand that the draft is involuntary servitude. It's immoral, un-American, and this volunteer Army vet never wants to see one in America ever again. There are plenty of volunteers - slavery isn't necessary.

Her son is a 17 year old child who needs to be protected from the news of the world?
My 17 yr old son is eagerly awaiting the day he joins the military, like his 21 yr old brother in the Navy and his 19 yr old brother in the Army. His 14 yr old brother wears Army and Navy shirts to middle school.
I've been widowed for six years and 3 months, and managed to avoid raising girly men.
Thank God.
Her boy needs a drill sergeant to protect him from his mommy so he can grow up to be a man SOON.
To: Servant of the 9
I think she needs to tell her son how sorry she is that she is raising him to be a girly-man.
This woman has "Hillary!-Voter" written all over her.

And now is a teenage boy who came home from school one day joking grimly (ha, ha!) that his senior friends were kidding each other by sharing strategies to avoid the draft: "You shoot me in the foot and I'll shoot you in the foot."Lady, while you've taught your son to be a potential draft dodger, some of us have been devoting our lives to the military. If the Clinton administration had been more concerned with maintaining a strong military and mounting effective responses to terrorist attacks (including the 1993 WTC bombing), you'd still be free to have your Volvo and be an oblivious idiot.

i love that the dateline is Haverford, PA. I went to college there, and barely survived. It is the classic soft-brained, Leftist, peacenik, enclave of college professors, inherited wealth and suburban political correctness.
