February 24, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has dispatched the elite commando force that hunted down Saddam Hussein to Afghanistan for a new operation aimed at getting Osama bin Laden, officials said yesterday. Military sources confirmed that members of the shadowy Task Force 121, the unit that conducted the high-tech search for Saddam and his henchmen, have recently begun operating in the remote mountainous region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden and key al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives are believed to be hiding. The Task Force is made up of highly trained Delta and SEAL commandos, as well as CIA paramilitary operators. It operates outside normal military channels.

I don't have any problem with the European news sites. When we were in the first Gulf War, I watched war info on the Mexican news - which had twice as much coverage as the States. It opened my eyes about our news.

This incident in Alabama with a mystery plane going through a power line, reminds me of the posting from last week of a similar plane/powerline incident in Texas.

Plane Clips Line, Causes Damage (03-10-04)

VERBENA - Alabama Power Company is searching for a plane that damaged a distribution line stretching across the Coosa River north of Mitchell Dam on the lake. The incident took place just south of Ware Island between Cargile Creek and Blue Creek off Chilton County Road 543.

The plane, witnessed by someone boating on the lake in the southeast corner of Chilton County, took down the line, causing an unspecified number of customers to go without electrical service for some time. The plane, white with blue markings, was flying north, according to the witness.
Also, the company was forced to deploy a boat and power delivery construction crew to the scene to repair problem, which took a day to complete.

The company had to splice 1000 feet of cable of an 1800-foot cable across the river in order to make certain the line hold. If anyone has information regarding the incident, please call the company's Clanton office at 280-4403.

"We have talked with FAA officials and they are surprised that the plane didn't crash," company spokesperson Jan Ellis said. "We would be interested in finding out who is responsible for this incident."

According to the FAA website, not reporting an incident such as this is a federal offense.

I do not understand why they are still allowing people to hunt deer.

Over a year ago, Promed was pushing for the hunters to wear surgical gloves to dress out the deer.

I think it didn't happen a lot in the past because we maintained our electrical equipment better then. We had more money and paid our workers to do the work. Now all we hear is that people are laid off or not replaced and since there are fewer workers, the work isn't up-to-date. Utility workers make good wages. Overtime is not something they like to pay. When I worked at a utility many years back overtime was double-time. I was surprised to see Vegas is employing a couple of year-long employees to do the work. One lawsuit could easily be more than those wages.

Poisoning hit Iraq minority community

An estimated 400 Iraqis from the minority Muslim Yazid sect were poisoned
in northern Iraq, apparently from drinking water which was contaminated
deliberately.

Daily Taakhi, the newspaper of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, said dozens
of inhabitants in the town of Khanki, in the province of Dahouk, 550
kilometers (315 miles) north of Baghdad, were taken to hospital for severe
poisoning and many died Wednesday from dehydration.

The newspaper said that the poisoning appeared to be a terrorist act.

It said the incident occurred a few days after writings were found on walls
in the northern city of Mosul calling for the killing of Yazidis, who were
described as infidels.

Yazidis, estimated at only 10 000, follow an offshoot sect of Shiism and
consider themselves part of the Kurdish ethnicity. They mostly live in
towns and villages west of Mosul and north of the Kurdish province of Dahouk.
