February 24, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has dispatched the elite commando force that hunted down Saddam Hussein to Afghanistan for a new operation aimed at getting Osama bin Laden, officials said yesterday. Military sources confirmed that members of the shadowy Task Force 121, the unit that conducted the high-tech search for Saddam and his henchmen, have recently begun operating in the remote mountainous region along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where bin Laden and key al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives are believed to be hiding. The Task Force is made up of highly trained Delta and SEAL commandos, as well as CIA paramilitary operators. It operates outside normal military channels.

U.S. Target List...in a Full Scale Nuclear War

The Soviet strategy for nuclear war is much different than ours. For a first strike the general plan would be to send in submarine launched missiles first. With a flight time of about 20 minutes to their farthest targets they could take out command and control, sub bases (where at any given time a large percentage of our missle boats are in port), SAC bases (and airports where bombers and tankers may have been dispersed ), and air bursts over our own missile fields. The air bursts would keep our own missiles from being launched while their own "silo busters" would come chugging over the North Pole from their land based ICBM's and dig up our missile fields. The location of our missile fields is of special interest to anyone planning on trying to deal with radioactive fallout. Air bursts such as was used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki produce suprisingly little fallout compared with what would be produced by ground bursts on our missile fields and other "hard targets".

I hope you're not suggesting that AQ is behind the outbreak of Rabies, which has been a cyclical problem here in the Northeast for as long as I can remember. Back in 1993, there were dozens and dozens of reports of rapid skunks, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes. The number of reported incidents then declined over the next few years and now it is back on the increase and in a few years it will go down again, and then back up again, etc. Sort of like economic cycles and global warming.

There was some mention of AQ having the capability to use aerosoled rabies in a bio attack. If they did so, I would imagine that a large number of people from the same geographic area would become ill.

Personally, I think they would go for the smallpox.

I don't need to suggest that AQ is behind any outbreaks. The FBI has done a decent job of listing Rabies as a bio-terror agent. I listed the CDC link regarding rabies at the end of my rabies post so that anyone who is interested could check-out the incident norms for their area.

Very interesting info about "The Maldive Mystery" - I will have to try to get a copy of that. I have read several other books by Thor H., and enjoyed all, but I had not heard of that one.

As an interesting side note, one member of the crew of the "Ra" was a muslim. It's more than a little disingenuous if they (the muslims) try to accuse Mr. Heyerdahl of bias, when he chose a muslim for a crewmember.

Bomb Bluster or Buildup? Nigerian Officials Scramble to Allay Atomic Fears

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) - The Nigerian government denied Friday that it ever sought atomic weapons, distancing itself from earlier statements that suggested its military wanted to develop nuclear capability.

Friday's denial, coupled with the other claims, left experts unsure if the African powerhouse was trying to mask its nuclear ambitions, or if it was guilty only of government bungling.

The Nigerian vice president's office said five weeks ago that a visiting North Korean delegation had offered the country missile technology. On Wednesday, the Defense Ministry cited a top Pakistani official as saying Pakistan was trying to decide how to help the Nigerian military "strengthen its military capability and to acquire nuclear power." ……..
