"Mars thread may be from lander"
Darn - I was hoping that one of the landers had made a direct connection right here to FreeRepublic. They do have the perfect names - Spirit and Opportunity.

Amazing. That pic was taken on sol 46. Spirit was about 120 meters away from the lander then, and half-way to Bonneville Crater.
I wonder how much longer NASA is going to claim these things we'll be seeing probably come from the lander? A kilometer? When Spirit reaches its maximum range? If so, NASA needs to come up with another landing method that doesn't contaminate such large areas with debris. Geez, we're there to discover what strange things actually are native to Mars, not confound ourselves and open the door for the naysayers to rush in.

This does lend credence to the idea that we affect everything just by observing.
Some scientists in another article were suggesting that everything found on Mars has an analog on the Hawaiian Islands and have thus far catalogued everything yet seen by the landers. Their point was that the "lake bed" is actually the remnants of a lava flow, Mars' features are volcanic in nature and all this searching for evidence that water once flowed is ridiculous. They say their colleagues lapsed in scientific method and blew billions of dollars on an assumption.

Don't know whether to call this ironic or what . . . We travelled so far to find something new, only to discover we can't see beyond the end of our own nose, lol!
