Female Students Say They Fear Lesbians' Harassment School Holds Meeting On Alleged Threats
POSTED: 6:49 pm EST February 18, 2004 UPDATED: 8:25 pm EST February 18, 2004
PHILADELPHIA -- Gang concerns brought parents and students together Wednesday at a west Philadelphia middle school. But the kind of gang may surprise you.
Girls at the Turner Middle School allege that lesbian students are harassing them with gay remarks. The straight students say lesbians are bullying, groping and harassing them in gym and in the girl's bathrooms.
Parents of the students say the harrassment must stop before it becomes violent.
"I told them, 'No.' And they kept bothering us. (They) kept coming to us asking us to become gay," said Felicia Anderson (pictured, left), a straight student.
Anderson, 14, said she doesn't like it and it makes her cry.
Wednesday morning, Felicia and her mother joined around 24 other parents and students to meet with school officials behind closed doors for two hours at Turner Middle School.
"(I am) very angry. Now my daughter is afraid to come to school," said Tonya Grandy, a parent of a student who said she was harrassed.
Other parents said they were also fed up with the sexual harassment from as many as a dozen 8th-graders at Turner.
"She called me last week screaming and hollering and crying because they had her in the gym cornered off, telling her what they were gonna make her do," said Renee Alexander.
"Don't nobody wanna be gay. Don't nobody wanna be harassed. Don't nobody wanna be scared to come to school," said Kendra Branch, a student.
State Rep. Ron Waters, who attended the meeting, said all students were reminded about the school's code of conduct. It includes policies against bullying and sexual harassment with consequences.
"(You don't have to) accept it as part of growing up. They're violating your right," Waters explained.
Perhaps the most productive moment came when one mother, Barbara Crawford, whose daughter has been accused of harassment asked for help.
"Accusations, fighting and all that. Maybe my daughter is causing trouble. Maybe not. I know it's a change and I need help. I'm going to do something about it if I have to walk her to school and pick her up -- or even transfer her to another school," Crawford said.
Crawford said she is pleased with how the school is handling this situation. Philadelphia schools have a zero tolerance policy regarding harassment and bullying. Officials at Turner Middle School declined comment on Wednesday's meeting.

"Lesbians in middle school? I don't think so."
Believe it. I've seen it.
Psychiatrist "Reassures" Parents About Lesbian Experimentation
"...The article describes a parent-faculty meeting at The Spence School, a private enclave overlooking Central Park, where several eighth-grade girls had declared themselves "bisexual." The school called in a Harvard-educated psychiatrist, Dr. Justin Richardson--himself a gay man--to reassure the parents that lesbian experimentation is common, and that it was too soon to know if they would be lesbians or heterosexuals.
At the all-girl Brearly School two weeks earlier, Dr. Richardson told a parent group to advise their daughters as young as nine years old that they, too, may have sex with other girls in the future. "It is a good idea," he said, "to mention that people have sex with members of the same sex sometimes, and that when they grow up they may have friends that do that--and that it may be something that they themselves do."
"A small but growing number of students," the Times article reported, "have come out at these schools, or at least say that bisexuality is stylish." Parents are concerned, and Dr. Richardson--"pedigreed, carefully-spoken, determinedly nonthreatening--has become the schools' gay issues consultant of choice" because he is "sane and clear," according to the Spence headmaster..."
The pair of lesbian ex-nuns who used to live downstairs from me had a domestic violence rate of 100%. The butch had cold blue eyes and used to like mental cruelty -- I could hear her talking in a low, cold voice while the other one wept desolately and called her names.
Do you believe that there is such a thing as a bad seed, a person born with a predisposition to wickedness? I am undecided, but surely all of us have met people who seemed from earliest childhood to be inclined to lying, cheating, stealing, perverse behavior of all sorts--the sociopaths who lack normal human feelings and care only for their own stimulation. Sometimes I think back to people like this and question whether they were born with something wrong.
We all are. Man is inherently evil.

They were born exactly like the rest of us were. There but for the grace of God go I. I had parents who taught me that such behaviors were wrong.
Seems like this girl was materially spoiled but never disciplined. She was 'trained' to be out for her own good and no one else's. She acts exactly like a spoiled two year old who's never been spanked.
We see lots and lots of these kids now. We also see lots of adults like this. Most of whom describe themselves as 'gay'
What we have here is a failure of the parents. Homosexuality (that is, a pattern of homosexual behavior) is caused by (1) molestation, (2) an absent or insufficient relationship with one's father or (3) relentless teasing by one's peers during the foramtive years. This girl may have a 'loving family' on the outside but I'll guarentee you she lives in her own personal hell on the inside.
Considering the topic, do you care to rephrase that? ;-)
