I also am running Win XP on a 9 month old Hewlett Packard; everything comes up clean when I scan for bugs, but *something* sure has my computer throwing some hissy-fits lately.

utoh. You bought xp seperately and lost product registration code? That is very series. You may end up buying it again.

As Neets pointed out, Winnet.exe is the program "common name" which runs the CommonName Toolbar. It is an unstable program that eats up 90% of your CPU time. Getting rid of it will make surfing seem like a dream come true.

The only way to get rid of it, though, is to remove it in add/remove programs then run Spybot. You better get rid of iMesh and Kazaa, too, if you have them, so that it doesn't reinstall through them.

The XP Number they want is in the "Control Panel". Open this up and then "System". It is on the first page under "General". in case you can't find the control panel?...get back to me.

If it is a virus, you can detect it using this online service:

Thanks for the link. My machine is clean which is really amazing considering where this computer has been :)

There were a lot of other problems as well. A lot of errors, including some on shut down.

I can't even remember how to do partitions anymore. But that makes for easy formatting.

There is a really really annoying error message on my computer that will not go away. The message reads:

First off, does anyone know what winnet is? Is it an important file to the computer? Also this error message comes up every three minutes whether I am off or online. It also seems to slow everything down. I did a spybot search and destroy and ad-aware and the thing still comes up. I cleaned it off the msconfig startup. I did a folder search and deleted the file, but one of the three labeled winnet files will not delete it says that the file may be currently in use. I don't know what to do, but it is driving me crazy Please help me.

End the task, search your computer for winnet.exe and delete it.

Update your Anti-Virus software.

Hey yah, I found another form of this winnet thing on my msconfig startup. Thanks for those links, cause now I know all the names associated with the great evil winnet so I could find all of it that spread through my comp.

Open the task manager and end process on the following:

Then run HijackThis again and place a check in the box next to the following entries, close any open browser windows and click 'fix checked'.
You must restart your computer when finished.
