Several thousand demonstrators clashed with supporters of Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide this weekend as they marched through the streets of the capital Port-au-Prince. We speak with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) about what role the U.S. is playing in the current events in the country. In Haiti, anti-government gangs and militias are working with opposition groups and former army officers in an effort to overthrow the government of Jean Bertrand Aristide. There is concern that Washington is once again working behind the scenes to foment a coup.
For weeks, Haiti has seen armed gangs attacking government forces and supporters in various towns and cities across the country. Pro-government supporters have been defending Aristide. There have been a series of armed battles that have resulted in at least 40 deaths. Haiti has no army and has a dwindling police force numbering only a few thousand.
On Sunday, several thousand demonstrators clashed with Aristide supporters as they marched through the streets of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Police used tear gas to keep the two sides apart.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yvon Neptune told the BBC that the government planned to launch an attack to regain control of Gonaives, the fourth-largest city in Haiti. Anti-government gangs are thought to control about 11 towns and cities across the country.

Really. Direct these complaints to Bill Clinton I'd say.

She's a nut case. Send her to Port Au Prince to single handedly clean up the mess.

If her accusations are true, I would call it an excellent development. Reinstalling the Marxist thug Aristide in Haiti was one of Clinton's most unforgivable misadventures.

Of course, it was U.S. troops who placed Aristide in power.
I guess it is O.K. for the U.S. to place a corrupt communist cliche murder supporter in power, but not to replace him.

Nitwit she is. We don't have to do anything to encourage a coup in that god-forsaken country, run by a Clinton-annointed thug and his bands of thuglets.
FWIW, I read on a European site that Aristeide's family members have all fled Haiti in the last day or two, so maybe this time it's really going to happen.

The best policy regarding Haiti is to stay out of it. if Haitians attempt to escape their rathole and invade the US, their boats should be turned back or sunk.

I suggest that she go and observe the action way up close. We might get lucky.

Haiti can be a confusing place. I spent five years doing business there and vistied the island for a week of every month. YOu quickly learn to love the people and question the government. Unfortutnately most every govt. Haiti has ever had has been semi or outright corrupt. Most of the people want freedom and democracy but due to circumstances beyond their control dont' even know what the words mean. As usual the U.S. barely has a clue about the country and consequently most everything we do there is wrong.

From a
Maxine Waters biography:
"Rep. Waters also was arrested in front of the White House urging justice for Haitian refugees and the restoration of democracy in Haiti. She was a key figure in Congressional efforts to restore to power Haitis democratically-elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide."
