The administration rolled out its top immigration officials and several senior Republican senators yesterday to endorse publicly a guest-worker program offered by President Bush that could give legal status to the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens now in the United States.

The more I hear of this amnesty madness from the WH and Republicans the less likely I am to vote for Bush under any circumstances.
As I've said before, I consider this amnesty plan to be the worst possible policy for the country in the long run, more important than tax cuts, judges, even the WOT.

The "problem" at it's heart is border protection.

These experts you watched all live in gated communities. Their children go to private schools. Most of your experts have government insurance and don't have to worry about their premiums increasing to cover illegals.
The real experts are those American CITIZENS who have said overwhelmingly, "NO",(70%) to illegal aliens. These are the people that deal with it on a daily basis.
The 86 act took 5 years to debate.
How long do you think this one will take and just when do you expect them to come up with a package to be voted on that will pass muster.
Frankly, this issue will likely not even be high on the list for the election. The rest of the country could not care less about it.

Suggestions were made yesterday by this panel to completely trash can the current immigration law and start over.

All this crap about amnesty is a red herring when you look at what some of the more meaningful suggestions are.
The democrats want amnesty, not the repubs and not GWB. This is a very complicated issue and you cannot simplify it in a word.

That's certainly what you guys---including the White House staff---believe. But maybe you haven't noticed the impact illegal immigration is having in states like Georgia, North Carolina, Iowa, which could be critical to Bush winning.

You're doggone right it's an issue in my home state of California---it was Ann Coulter's immediate reaction to the amnesty proposal (call it what you want, partner---it's an amnesty) that "Bush has written off California," even though the Golden State was put in play for 2004 thanks to the recall. It's an issue in other border states critical to a Bush re-election, like Arizona, where they have an initiative now like our Prop. 187, which the Bush White House is busy trying to squelch. And it's an issue in Florida---remember Florida? Bush may be willing to write off California, but Florida?

Wait a minute, a Bush backer is 'splaining it to me....hmmm....Oh, I see now, Bush needed this money to fund the National Endowment for the Arts.

What the states want is federal money to defer costs incurred.
That is all that I have read of late in the major media despite people like O'rielly beating the troops on the border drum.
Perhaps it will come to the front later on, but money seems to be all they are concerned about. (as far as election issues go)
Here is a better reason for Republicans to oppose it.
