I recently took a walk in Borough Park, Brooklyn, and noticed posters prominently displayed all over the streets: "STOP The Silent Holocaust 2,000,000 children destroyed by abortion in Israel." The signs were posted by EFRAT-C.R.I.B, an Israeli-based group that works to prevent Jewish families in Israel from aborting their children. The poster listed major Rabbis as sponsors.
I was shocked by the enormity of this numbertwo million Jews over the last 55 years, murdered by their own parentscould such a thing really be true, could so many Jewish mothers have murdered so many of their own children? A little research confirmed the horrible statistic.
At the 1994 United Nations International Conference on Population and Development, Dr. Baruch Levy, the official representative of the State of Israel, stated: "
according to a law of the Knesset, passed in 1977, abortions are legal when performed in authorized medical institutions and approved by special abortion committees. The overwhelming majority of requests for legal abortions are, in fact, approved for health and CERTAIN SOCIAL REASONS [emphasis mine]."
How does this work out in practice? Well, to take a fairly typical example, in 1999, 20,581 women submitted applications to the abortion committees. Of this number 18,785 (96%) were approved. The committees approved almost every application that was submitted. The only reason that all 100% of the applications were not approved is that the religious parties in Israel managed to forbid abortions based on economic reasons alone.
Commenting on a videotape that was sent to 350,000 homes in Israel by EFRAT-C.R.I.B. in 2001, Health Minister Nissim Dahan (Shas) stated: "I received the impression that
the abortion committees approve terminations of pregnancy without sufficient thought."
In his worldwide survey of abortion rates, William Robert Johnson gives the incredible statistic that total REPORTED abortions in Israel, from 1979 thru 2002 (23 years) were 411,000. This figure means that about 13% of Israeli children are murdered in the womb each year. Additionally, he cautions that these are only the official figuresthe unreported figures may be double the reported amount (or 822,000). In the 55 years since the founding of the State of Israel, we could project a figure of about two million abortions.
Should we be surprised that the sword has been unleashed against our people in the Holy Land?
Our continued silence on this issue makes us vulnerable, chas vesholom, to the punishments of hunger, plague, and the sword prophesized in the Zohar Hakodosh.
Now that Rosh Hashana (the New Year) is here, it is time for us to do Teshuva (repent) on this horrible crime in G-Ds Holy Land. If we truly want to end the sacrifice of Jewish blood of our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land of Israel, we must cry out to the heavens, loudly and clearly, against this shedding of innocent blood.
Only then will we be entitled to say "Yodeinu lo shofchu es hadam hazeh" (Our hands have not shed this innocent blood).

This article stunned me utterly. Discovered this through networking w/ Freepers.
If these abortion numbers in Israel are actually true, then it's utterly unfathomable to me Sharon's recent statements regarding the demographic problems Israel is facing. Unfathomable that he didn't address this topic that is.
Folks, I'm very interested in this question now in a way that never occured to me before: what is the abortion rate in Muslim countries? Do Muslim countries even have abortion rates that can be measured??

FYI..the vast majority of Jews in Israel are non-observant..so, there's a defintie co-relation..OTOH, here in the good ole USA, we have Joe Lieberman, a "modern Orthodox Jew"..whatever the heck that is..proclaiming to the hills his support for killing babaies, and not ONE Orthodox rabbi threatening to perform a second circumcision on him for saying that..

No, it's illegal in most Islamic countries.
Here's an interesting little tidbit for your consumption:
When the Islamic fundamentalists in Iran toppled the Shah in 1979, the U.S. embassy was actually the second building they seized during their uprising. The first building they sacked was the Tehran offices of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
Kind of puts things in a different perspective, doesn't it?

Abortion is illegal in Muslim countries. And in Mexico.
This 13% rate of abortion to conception in Israel, in the article, is well under the some 25% rate in the USA since 1973.

Islam permits abortion in the first few months for medical reasons but it rarely happens as children are so desired. And the technology to detect medical problems in the womb is lacking in most places.

Thanks...I've found that I usually have a different perspective.

Most people estimate the rate of illegal abortions in Israel at 40% to 50% of the legal abortion rate, not the 100% mentioned in the article, for a total rate in the high teens. The legal rate, though, is about half the US.
I can't locate the link to the UN worldwide state, but Johnstons Archive has a pretty good set of tables at Abortion statistics and other data which do include estimates for some countries, like Turkey, with large Islamic populations.

If nearly 100% of applications for abortion are accepted, why would there be a need for an illegal abortion market half-again as big as the legal one?

. . . then it's utterly unfathomable to me Sharon's recent statements regarding the demographic problems Israel is facing. In that sense, Israel is no different than the United States, which aborts more than a million children a year while at the same time allowing more than a million immigrants (legal and illegal) to pour across our borders on an annual basis. And yet we are such ignorant, short-sighted morons that we actually keep a straight face while we complain about illegal immigration in this country.

For what it's worth, Muslim countries are essentially the only significant supporters of the Vatican in its lonely fight with the UN to stop abortion becoming a universal "human right".
Of course, their "pro-life" position seems somewhat less clearly defined when it comes to condemning the barbaric practice of "suicide" bombing, but on abortion they have more in common with Christians than the western secular humanists who promote the "culture of death."

Maybe you should check into the Orthodox definition of when life begins.

Israel has been sacrificing infants on the altar of Moloch for three thousand years - it's a nasty habit they picked up from the pagans.
HOW many times throughtout history has God brought judgement on them for following in the ways of the pagans....?

I'm not Muslim, and I'm not a terrorist, but maybe they see the unborn as being truly innocent, while the victims of suicide bombs...they see as being sopportive of what they deem to be the enemy.

"And yet we are such ignorant, short-sighted morons that we actually keep a straight face while we complain about illegal immigration in this country."
The back connection to the USA didn't escape my attention. It's just I've lately come to conclude that at a mass cultural level, we are following Israeli cultural trends, not leading them. 9-11 is just the latest manifestation. But, the abortion part over the last 55 years. That was very, very new information to me.

That's a very interesting table.
Abortion is a horror anywhere that it occurs, and a 13% abortion rate in Israel is awful.
However, the fact is that according to your table the abortion rate is higher not only in poor countries including Russia (61%), Ukraine (53%), Belarus (53%), etc., but also such western countries as Greenland (52%), Australia (26%), Sweden (26%), South Korea (25%), the US (24%), New Zealand (24%), Canada (24%), the UK (23%), Singapore (23%), Japan (22%), Italy (20%), Norway (20%), France (20%), Denmark (19%), Iceland (18%), Texas (!?) (17%), Finland (16%), Germany (16%), Spain (14%) and Switzerland (13%).
It is a worldwide tragedy.
