Body of missing Sarasota girl found; mechanic charged

By MITCH STACY
Associated Press Writer

SARASOTA, Fla. — The body of an 11-year-old girl whose abduction was captured by a surveillance camera has been found in a church parking lot and a mechanic has been charged with her murder, officials said Friday.

Sarasota County Sheriff Bill Balkwill refused to say where Carlie Brucia's body was found, but a law enforcement source close to the investigation said it was found between 12:45 a.m. and 1 a.m. Friday at a church not far from the car wash. Investigators found the body after negotiations with Smith, the source said on condition of anonymity.

"Our prayers on behalf of everybody here in Sarasota County go out to the family," Balkwill said.

He said Joseph P. Smith, 37, has been charged with her murder. He is believed to be the tattooed man in a mechanic's shirt who was seen in a car wash surveillance video leading Carlie away by the arm Sunday evening, authorities said.

"We now stand ready to complete our obligation, and assure you that he will pay the ultimate price for what he did to her," Capt. Jeff Bell said.

Family and friends had kept vigil outside Carlie's ranch-style house which was decorated with banners and posters reading, "We love you, Carlie."

Carlie was described by friends as a beautiful girl who loved actress Jennifer Lopez, going to the mall and hanging out. The youngster was known for greeting friends with warm hugs. She was heading home from a slumber party when she was abducted. She had a cat named Charlie........

God bless her family. Her poor mother. I guess we cannot let our kids walk alone on a city street anymore even in daylight. Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

We have the tape, suspect and the little girl's body. I say it is time to get the rope, a can of gas and find a nice strong tree near a swamp and have a good ole fashion lynching and burning party, I mean that is what I say or better yet someone should tie a millstone around his neck and cast his ass into the sea.

It would be better for him to have a millstone place round his neck and cast into the deepest part of the ocean than on the day he meets his maker...

Send him there ASAP

Lord please give her parents your peace and strength in dealing with the awefull pain they now must bear...in Jesus' name

Smith has been arrested at least 13 times in Florida since 1993, according to state records. He was arrested in 1997 in Manatee County on kidnapping and false imprisonment charges, but was acquitted a year later. He served 17 months in state prison for heroin possession and prescription drug fraud and was released on New Year's Day 2003. He was arrested eight days later on a cocaine possession charge and was placed on probation for three years. He also was placed on probation for aggravated battery in 1993 and heroin charges in 1999.

You wonder why on earth is a guy like this freed from prison. The liberals who support releasing this type of prisoner are responsible for this little girl's death --- this guy was already known to be a large problem.

Many of us here -- me included -- would just as soon see Joseph P. Smith killed slowly and painfully. God help us all -- while it would satisfy, it can't be how God would have it happen.

If Smith is to die, I say just snuff him quickly, without ceremony or fuss, the same way we would kill other vermin. Let God take care of the rest of it.

I, personally, would favor not killing him at all -- just bury him in a featureless welded steel box, and feed him one tasteless meal per day until he dies of old age.

Or, better, give him something with which to hang himself in his cell. If it's good enough for Judas, it's good enough for Joseph P. Smith.

What an awful, horrible, nauseating story.

I am the father of four little girls, and I can't imagine a worse crime.

Unless it is repeatedly releasing violent sociopaths back into society after brutalizing them further for a few years.

The whole criminal justice-prison complex has lost its way and is a threat to society, as well as everyone's little girls.

Once someone demonstrates a proclivity to assault others with intent to cause harm, they should be isolated permanently, or killed (to be up front, I strongly favor the latter).

There is no reason to believe that their desire to commit these horrendous acts can be modified or eliminated. Prison for a term of years is not punishment to them-to be supported while in the company of their own kind, and able to prey on a constant supply of weaker people, is like going to a resort for you or I.

In addition to which, a prison term ends while their perverse desires, and the ability to carry them out, does not.

We send them to prison because we (rightly) have a horror of prison, as all normal people should, and from this we draw the incorrect inference that we are doing something horrible to them.

Prison does not reform or correct them (in many cases it makes them more efficient and better predators), and they all get out.

The population of violent sociopaths is not so large that they could not be isolated or eliminated.

Let's get going.

This didn't have to happen.

Smith was on probation and tested positive for heroin, yet was let go

Its the same old stopry of the justice system failing the public. Nearly every high profile case reveales this truth over and over.

Other recent stories--

Dru Sjodin's murderer had three prior rapes, one with aggravated kidnapping, yet he was out.

David Maust killed three teenagers and buried them in his basement. He had two prior murder convcitions.

Even though not one innocent person has been known to have oied because of the death penalty it takes up all the debate time. Yet innocent people like this girl are killed nearly every day, killed by monsters who should be in prison but somehow aren't. Where is the attention to that issue?
