SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Suspicious Powder Found In Rural Mailboxes

PENROSE, Colo. -- A powder found in a number of rural mailboxes near Penrose is being examined, law enforcement officials said.

The powder was found Thursday morning in four mailboxes at one intersection and four more along another rural road, the Fremont County sheriff's office said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Samantha McCalla said samples were collected and a lab is trying to determine what the powder is.

Penrose volunteer firefighters had help from the Canon City fire department's hazardous materials team in cleaning up the powder.

Officials said they aren't aware of threats that could be connected to the mailbox powder.

Don't worry too much about that rice. Arkansas produces at least half of all of our country's rice. The world's largest exporter is Thailand, with India and Vietnam coming in second and third, the U.S. is fourth, with China coming in fifth. I have no idea if, or how much, rice is imported from China by the U.S.. Check your bags of rice. All of mine comes from Arkansas.

A couple of years ago I was driving through Arkansas, on my way to Spring River for a canoe trip. My friend said she felt so sad that the poor farmers' fields were so flooded, and that they would lose so many crops. I had a good laugh over that one!

JAPAN RAISES TERROR ALERT TO HIGHEST LEVEL, AP REPORTS

Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Japan raised its terror alert level to its highest since March and posted heavily armed police at airports, government offices and nuclear power plants, the Associated Press reported.

No specific reason was given for the increased alert, the AP said, citing an unidentified official with the Japanese National Police Agency.

Security was also stepped up at the prime minister's residence, the U.S. Embassy, military facilities, ports, rail stations and shopping malls, the official told AP.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A case of the bird flu virus was found in a poultry farm in Texas, the fourth U.S. state to be affected by the disease, state government officials said on Friday.

The Texas Animal Health Commission said a flock of chickens in Gonzales County tested positive for the H5N2 strain of avian influenza, a milder version of the potentially deadly disease.

"The clinical manifestation, or signs of disease in chickens, indicates this virus is a low-pathogenic strain," said Texas state veterinarian Bob Hillman.

Hillman said the Texas case posed "no health threat to humans and causes relatively low mortality in chickens."

Texas becomes the fourth U.S. state in two weeks to be affected by bird flu. Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have also reported mild strains of the virus.

State officials said it did not appear that bird flu had spread from the East Coast states into Texas.

"At present, there does not appear to be any connection between the cases on the East Coast and the infected flock in Texas," Hillman said.

The U.S. bird flu strains were different from the H5N1 strain that has devastated poultry flocks in Asia and claimed at least 22 lives there.

More than 20 countries have banned imports of some or all U.S. poultry. Russia, the top U.S. poultry buyer, earlier on Friday placed a temporary ban on Texas chickens even before it was publicly announced.

Japan raises terror alert to highest level

TOKYO -- Japan raised its terror alert to its highest level on Friday, mobilizing heavily armed police around airports, nuclear plants and government offices to guard against a possible attack, an official said.

It the was first time the government went on such a heightened alert since the U.S.-led military attack on Iraq in March 2003.

A National Police Agency official refused to discuss whether the government had new information about a possible terror strike.

The official said riot police armed with automatic rifles would guard Tokyo and Kansai international airports and nuclear power and reprocessing facilities, but wouldn't disclose how many officers were added.

Larger police forces were being mobilized and additional checkpoints set up around the prime minister's residence, U.S. Embassy, military facilities and national and local assembly buildings, he said. Security was also beefed up at ports, railway stations and shopping malls.

Beginning in late December, police tightened security at hundreds of facilities nationwide during the new year holidays.

Americans in Japan Warned of Terrorism

TOKYO (AP) - The U.S. Embassy warned Americans living in Japan to be on guard against possible terrorist attacks.

In a statement issued Friday afternoon to all resident Americans, the embassy said it had unconfirmed information that terrorists may strike U.S. military facilities or places frequented by U.S. military personnel.

Embassy spokesman Patrick Linehan described the threat as ``credible'' but could not give other details such as when or where a possible attack might occur. He also did not say when the warning would be lifted.

It was unclear whether the warning was specific to Japan or whether Americans in other countries had been warned too, Linehan said.

Such terrorist warnings are rare in Japan, Linehan said, adding that the last he remembered was a worldwide warning issued by the U.S. State Department last New Year's Eve.

Roughly 120,000 Americans live in Japan, according to the embassy's figures. Nearly 48,000 are active members of the U.S. military.

The connection here is obvious: the foreigners have the money to buy the building because they have our jobs.

Count me in on that - outsourcing weakens our economy and our workforce. Corporate America may make more money and lower the wage pool, but these CEO's and companies make us more vulnerable as a nation because citizens will vote for politicians who will pledge to reduce this problem while putting national security issues on the back burner. Al Qaeda doesn't want our friendship - they want to eliminate us, both in Iraq and here on our own turf. America's strength needs to be more than military and those who sell us out are nothing short of traitors.

We've had three exchange students from Japan and they were the nicest young people you'd ever want to meet. Every time I hear of a volcanic eruption, Tsunammi or other event, I worry for them. Nothing gives you perspective about a country like knowing the people.
