SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Could they be referring to a chemical gas they used on dogs in Afghanistan? Here's an excerpt from article:

http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/08/18/terror.tape.main/

Among the most frightening scenes in the collection of tapes are those of testing of a poison gas on three dogs. The disturbing images show the dying moments of the defenseless, enclosed animals.

A senior Bush administration official who is intimately involved in weapons issues said he was "very troubled" by the issues the video raises, particularly about chemical weapons.

The official said the video of the chemical tests on the dogs suggest a very strong desire to acquire the capability to use such weapons against humans. Until now, he said, he had seen nothing that indicated bin Laden or al Qaeda had the capability.

"This tape is unquestionable documentation that he has some capability," he said. The tape, he said, shows "some level of sophistication, and indicates they were trying to get results."

In one scene, a group of unidentified men wearing Afghan-style sandals rush out of an enclosure where one of the dogs is penned. A white liquid that gives off a gas is then seen seeping in from the left. Soon, the dog begins showing physical reactions.

Avian flu strain discovered at four live chicken markets in N.J.

The Associated Press
2/12/2004, 7:15 a.m. ET

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A strain of avian influenza has been found at four live chicken markets in northern New Jersey, just days after similar outbreaks at farms in Delaware led to the destruction of 80,000 birds.

New Jersey health officials stressed that the findings are not unusual for the state's live poultry markets and said the strain found is not known to be harmful to humans. They also disputed claims that the finding could indicate that the virus festers in New Jersey's poultry markets.

Nancy Halpern, the state veterinarian, said the markets likely got the virus from one of the many farms and distributors who supply them. New Jersey has about 35 live chicken markets across the state.

"We believe the virus is coming to (the markets)," Halpern told The Star-Ledger of Newark. "They can be doing everything right and still have a market that tests positive."

Halpern said the state tested the markets in late January, as it typically does every winter, and results have been received for about half the sites. She would not identify the markets where the strain was found,

Clifton Lacy, commissioner of the state Department of Health and Senior Services. said there was only a small chance that the weak strain of avian flu — the same one found in Delaware — could mutate into a stronger form that could harm humans.

"The key (to preventing problems) is stringent sanitary measures on farms and culling the flocks," he said.

I think we're going over the edge on the Avian Flu issue, which is not new even in epidemic proportions to the poultry industry. If I recall correctly, the last great epidemic in the Northeast was in the late 1970's and/or early 1980's. It originated in Pennsylvania and millions of birds were liquidated to stop the spread. The situation was so serious that workers and visitors had to wear those white protective suits when entering the farms, and go through decontamination when entering and leaving a farm. My point that Avian Flu has a been a problem long before AQ hit the scene and it will remain a problem as long as there is a poultry industry.

I hope you are right, but you might want to keep an eye on this thread at IH just in case:

Avian flu] 02/12/04 - Pandemic plan out at 1130

CBC news will hold a live news conference beginning at 1130 by Heath Canada with the official release of the plan. It hasn't been web posted yet & I hope it will be by then. In the meantime I've heard on a few morning news shows that Thailand had confirmed a sixth case, a teenaged boy I believe who is alive but in critical condition.

A few things to read & post in the mean time... __________________

I don't know anything about East Asian bird flus, but I do know a lot about the typical avian flu that we see here in the Northeast. Like global warming and cooling, avian flu epidemics have occurred in the past and will occur in the future. The best that can be done is to quarantine and kill the birds in the infected areas. Transmission to humans is very rare although not impossible. Again, that has happened in the past as it will in the future.

Sept. 11 Panel to Ask for Bush Testimony

MADISON, N.J. - The federal commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks will soon ask President Bush, former President Bill Clinton and their vice presidents to testify in public about possible warnings they might have received from U.S. intelligence sources before the attacks.

"We need them to testify," former New Jersey Gov. Thomas H. Kean, the bipartisan commission's chairman, told The Record of Bergen County in a story published Thursday. He said the panel would issue formal invitations within the next few weeks, although he conceded that all four men would probably decline to be questioned at a public forum.

However, Kean said their cooperation was crucial to the commission's work, so he hoped they would at least consent to private interviews with the panel.

"They all have important pieces to tell us and important questions to answer, so they will all be getting an invitation and we're in contact already with their staffs in every case," Kean said Wednesday on "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer."

Clinton has previously said that he would be willing to testify, and Bush said in an NBC interview last week that he would "perhaps" submit to questions from the commission.

Commission vice chairman Lee Hamilton told the "NewsHour," "My hope in the end that the president will agree that to meet with us and answer whatever questions we have."

However, a White House spokeswoman said Wednesday that she did not know whether Bush would agree to testify or be interviewed.

"I can't speculate on that," said Pamela Stevens, assistant White House press secretary. "We've given them committee members unprecedented access. We've worked in a very cooperative manner with them. We've given them 2.3 million documents, and we just continue to work with them in a cooperative manner."

Kean, who is now president of Drew University in Madison, said the commission also plans to seek public testimony from Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, CIA Director George Tenet, Attorney General John Ashcroft and their counterparts in the Clinton administration.

The Pennsylvania epidemic I referred to was 1983-84 and result in an early death to 17 million birds in that state alone. http://www.vafb.com/news/2002/may/050202_1.htm

You may also find this article interesting, which emphasizes my point that while the spread of avian flu to humans does happen, the incidence is very rare: http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/front/7830148.htm
