SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.
The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Excerpts of a Letter to al-Qaida Leaders Wed Feb 11, 2:09 PM ET
By The Associated Press
Excerpts from a letter, purportedly from anti-U.S. operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, to al-Qaida about the state of the insurgency in Iraq. The text of the letter was released by the U.S. military and translated from Arabic by The Associated Press:
On Iraqi Kurds: "They opened their land to the Jews and became their rear base and a Trojan horse for their plans. They (Jews) infiltrate through their land and take cover behind their banners, use them as bridges to cross into financial control and economic hegemony ..."
On Shiites: "Shiism is the overwhelming danger and real challenge."
"The American army began to retreat from some cities and its presence became scarce (in others). It's being replaced by the Iraqi army and this is the real problem we are facing. Fighting the Americans is easy because the enemy is obvious, its back is unprotected and it is ignorant of the terrain and the reality of the mujahedeen because of the weakness of their intelligence.
"We know for a fact that that these crusader forces will go tomorrow or the day after, but anyone aware of the reality will see how hurriedly the enemy is forming the police and army, which have begun to take over its duties. That enemy is made up of rejectionists (Shiites) and augmented by Sunni collaborators and is the real danger we face. They are our cousins and they know our ins and outs and they are more cunning than their crusader masters."
..."Regrettably, jihad here is planting mines and firing rockets and mortars from afar. The Iraqi brothers are still keen on safety ... some groups perhaps brag among themselves that none of them had been killed or captured and we told them many times that safety and victory don't go together."
..."This country has no mountains in which we can take refuge or woods in which we can hide. Our backs are unprotected and our movements are exposed and eyes are everywhere and the enemy is in front of us and the sea behind us."
..."America did not come here so it can leave and it will not leave no matter how many wounds it sustains and how much blood it sheds. "
..."We, thanks be to God, were the key to all martyrdom operations, including those in the north, planning and preparing for them. We have completed, with the help of God, 25 of them. Some of them targeted the rejectionists (Shiites) and their symbols, some the Americans and their soldiers, police and coalition forces. Those to come will be more, God willing."
..."Our hope is for our work tempo to accelerate, to form brigades and battalions that have experience and perseverance, and to wait for zero hour when we begin to appear in public and control the land at night and, God willing, also during the day. This zero hour we hope to extend for about four months before the proposed government is formed. As you can see, we are in a race against time. If we can, as we hope, turn the tables against them and spoil their plans, that would be good. But if it goes the other way, God forbid, and the government controls the country, then there will be no choice but to pack our bags and move to another land where we can once again carry our banner, or become martyrs."

When can we have normal again?Life with the threat of terrorism is the "new normal". We all know that terrorism is not new. What is new, for us average Joe's and Jane's, is the realization that the Muslim terrorists hate us as much as they do and that they are bringing their hatred and destruction to our front door.
This will be a long fight as there are many, many brainwashed jihad warriors. As we now know they are already brainwashing the next generation. This may be the "new normal" for the rest of our lifetimes. That does not mean that we will not win this war. I believe we will. We will have more attacks, and more losses. More deaths and more memorials. But, we will not lose. American and Americans are stronger than that.
We are also raising another generation of Americans, don't forget that. We must raise them to be strong, brave and free. To know what it means to be an American. To understand what our Constitution means. To know the value of freedom and to realize what destruction fanaticism brings; not only to our soil but to the people who live under the rule of fanaticism. Our hope is in our strength and our love of freedom; and in our children and how they are raised and what they are taught. That is our new normal.

Fresh from Vietnam, Kerry wanted U.S. troops abroad only under UN auspices CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry called for United Nations control of the U.S. military in an interview 34 years ago with Harvard University's student newspaper.
Kerry was a long-shot congressional candidate in Massachusetts when he was interviewed by The Crimson in February 1970. He was also a 26-year-old Vietnam veteran fighting against the continuing war. He described himself as "an internationalist" and said he wanted "to almost eliminate CIA activity."
"I'd like to see our troops dispersed through the world only at the directive of the United Nations," Kerry said.
"The CIA is fighting its own war in Laos and nobody seems to care," he later said.
As a presidential candidate, Kerry has said he supports the autonomy of the U.S. military and has not called for a reduction in CIA operations.
"Through 20 years in the United States Senate, John Kerry has stood up for the strongest military on earth and a muscular internationalism that makes America safe while winning the co-operation of allies," said Kerry spokesman David Wade. "Unlike (President) George Bush, John Kerry knows that while the United States never gives veto power over our security to any international institution, multilateralism is a strength and not a weakness."
Former U.S. secretary of labour Robert Reich, who has endorsed Kerry, said Kerry's statements were appropriate for their time.
"In the context of the Vietnam War, those comments are completely understandable," he said.
Kevin Madden, a spokesman for Bush's re-election campaign, said Kerry's remarks were a sign of his weakness on defence.
"President Bush will never cede the best interests of the national security of the American people to anybody but the president of the United States, along with the Congress," he said.
