It appears that in the main the chips don't get pressed into the soil and get buried, rather they simply explode as you can see by the change in surface brightness near the larger dissapearing particles.

Does this imply that there is gas under pressure in these grains that is released when they are disturbed?

What do you mean by 'applied pressure?' Did they have a big exam to study for? Did their boss give them a deadline? Did Coach say they had to win this game or they wouldn't make the playoffs?
