PRIZREN, Feb 3 (Tanjug) - Monks of the monastery of Saint Archangels in Prizren can no longer count on the escort of German KFOR, who have also banned them from using the military power generator, while the duty priest at Vladicanski dvor in Prizren is being denied food, the Raska-Prizren Eparchy stated on Tuesday.

This is in Kosovo where NATO "peacekeepers", called KFOR, from the US, Germany, Italy, Britain, France etc. are supposed to be keeping the peace. The Serbs still left are surrounded by hostile Albanians and need protection. However, the protection is very poor, and ethnic cleansing of the minority population and destruction of their churches have continued these last few years.

Prizren is a town in southern Kosovo, and the Germans control this sector, the US controls the eastern and southeastern part of Kosovo, and so on.

Germans are making it difficult, if not impossible, for Serbian monks to live in Kosovo. The monks cannot get food because the Albanians would kidnap and/or kill them if they venture out. If the Germans withold food the monks will starve.

OK, I now have some concept of what this is all about. Here are a few questions.

If all the Serbs are gone from this area, which I gather is the case, what is the congregation that is being served by the monks? Are they some contemplative order, or do they purport to have some other purpose for being where they are? The Serbs did some pretty nasty things in the Balkans in recent years, and they are pretty widely hated. The idea of payback, even against monks, shouldn't surprise anyone. Do the monks think they should be entitled to stay where the are and be protected by KFOR forever?

The monks are in a monastery so obviously they're not there to serve any particular congregation. The monasteries of Kosovo are listed as world cultural treasures and have been there since the Middle Ages. Therefore they predate the Albanian invasion of Kosovo. When you say "The Serbs" did some nasty things, do you mean the monks? What was happening in Kosovo was a result of payback to the KLA for murdering Serb police but clearly since Clinton had to make the area safe for radical Islamic drug running pimps he had to bomb a country just trying to hold on its own territory.

The monks clearly have a more legitimate right to be in Kosovo than KFOR and should be protected by the proper authorities i.e. the Serbian army and police. Just because Albanian illegal aliens were allowed in by Tito doesn't give them any more right to Kosovo than Mexican illegal aliens have a right to the American Southwest.

Your reply is very legalistic. Let's get practical. Of course I am not suggesting that the monks commited atrocities. But the Serbs did, and the local population, whether they are there legally or illegally, is probably not going to make that distinction. The monastaries may indeed be historical treasures (and, by the way, monastic orders take many forms and perform many functions), but sometimes nasty current events have a way of intruding intrude on romantic memories. The monks are highly likely to get killed where they are. I don't think it is right for them to abdicate all responsibility for their own safety, which is what I took from the story.
