China may legalize prostitution
Posted on 02/01/2004 3:22:33 AM PST by one_eyed_penguin
Hebei province will become the 1st province in China to legalize prostitution, other provinces will soon follow.
due to the massive failure of economic reform in rural area, landless peasants were left in poverty.

hint: China is finished

To be honest, while I don't agree with prostitution necessarily, I can see where it'd be useful for China. After years of the 1 baby-per-family indoctrination and enforced abortions and all that, many Chinese families decided to have boys rather than girls. As I understand it, they have a completely warped man to woman ratio now. Disposable men, as it were. Probably part of the planning so they could have plenty of "subjects" for their army, whatever.
The thing is, that's a lot of testosterone that their "socially engineered" society can't support. Imagine if about a million of them decided they were "grumpy" because of the inbalance and took it out on the government?
Ok, it'd be a good thing. Yet the Reds understand that they could be sitting on a powder keg, and figure they'd better accomodate the need rather than impede it, or they'll be finished.
At any rate, I'd not deny a man his manhood. What occurs between a man and woman in private is not necessarily my business. That's when the issue of morality kicks in though, and it's not like the reds have a chance on this one.
We're not doing so hot ourselves these days either...

Gee, that's awfully thoughtful of you. What about denying women their "womanhood"?With respect, it's a generalization that I feel that China has implemented an inhumane policy via their "social engineering" in the enforcement of the 1 child 1 family rule. The obvious repercussions are becomming clear now, with the unatural ratio of men to women in their population. I'm stating this from the perspective of because of these policies, these men, within their own society, man never have the opportunity to find a suitable mate. All because someone thought it looked good on paper.
No, I do not condone Chinese prostitution. I am simply pointing out that they must feel it's probably one of the few viable alternatives to keep their government from being obliterated.
So, any "takers" on when the UN gets involved? Perhaps one of those "Humane" organizations? {crickets chirping...silence ensueses..}

Also, believe me, I'm completely aware of what they do to women with the "enforced abortions" per their family policy. It's practically a Chinese holocaust. They pressure women heavily to become "fixed" after the first birth. Some families will actually kill the infant if it is a girl upon birth in hopes of eventually raising a child.
There is no end to the horrible atrocities being committed for the sake of this policy. Where I ask, is the voice of the "all-mighty U.N." or the Humane organizations on this? Even more, why are we doing business with these butchers?
There is much here to pursue in debate, it can really become emotional. Sometimes you just have to disconnect or it will break your heart.

There is much here to pursue in debate, it can really become emotional. Sorry, but I'm not buying it. There are plenty of good reasons for not defending legalized prositution that can be articulated without resorting to emotional appeals.
People that defend the indefensible are usually just looking for the easy way out.
To: Caipirabob
We have our own abortion "Butchers " to deal with.We have the Democratparty proposing abortion to 14 year olds without having to get their parents permission. We have Kerry who has stated flat-out that he would appoint no Judge who was not pro-abortion and we have the Dems in the Senate carrying out that rule by not allowing anti-abportion judges to be seated.

Some families will actually kill the infant if it is a girl upon birth in hopes of eventually raising a child.Where do you get this information? I've lived in China for ten years now, and in fact, people actually would rather have a girl. Chinese tradition holds that the husband must provide a "dowry" for the wife and her family. Modern times have made the dowry a diamond ring, house, car, and money to burn. Anyone who understands economics can understand that having a daughter is more cost efficient for a family...

Sorry, but I'm not buying it. There are plenty of good reasons for not defending legalized prositution that can be articulated without resorting to emotional appeals. Wow. No pleasing you today. I thought it was an objective commentary. Authentic debate on the issue at hand, no matter how repulsive. I'm not on the defensive on this issue at all. I simply can see what's at hand and embelished on the point.
I think it would help to simply acknowledge that this is happening and look at the reasons. When you can come up with a means to deal with it constructively it's would be worth exploring the issue further. It's certainly easy to "take shots" at a policy and condemn it, you haven't forwarded an effective solution. If you can't take the responsibility to put forth at least one alternative, don't be so quick to condemn my intent when I make an honest appraisal of what may be behind it, even when I don't approve of it.
And yes, I would never condemn a millions Chinese children/women to such a fate, I believe it's inhumane. I also have deep simpathy for the Chinese men who have to face a lifetime without hope of marraige, children, family and otherwise.
It's tragic. Don't get upset with me for it though. Have a nice day.

I'll try to dig up some sources and post them for you.
Over the years it has been widely reported that the policy of 1 child per family was causing this to take place. Especially in areas where families got by on manual labor. In addition, you can assess the truth based upon the current proportion of men to women in China.
According to a 1992 survey, the sex ratio of newborns was 118 males for every 100 females. These statistics indicate what the world had already speculated, that there is a great amount of female infanticide occurring in China. Although the Chinese government is not willing to give too many details in response to these accusations, countless reports prove that they have merit.
Sex-selection Abortions in China Cause Population Skew BEIJING, Oct 17 (AFP) - China's preference for baby boys has created a strong gender skew with around 118 male births for every 100 female births, demography experts warned Friday. "The male sex preference in China is clearly established with 118 or 119 male birth for 100 female births," said Caroline Hoy, a demographer from Dundee University. She said a survey of migrant workers carried out in Beijing in 1994 put the skew higher, at an average 139 male births for 100 female births. For those women who had given birth before moving to Beijing for work, the figure was even higher at 159 male births.
China Uses Abortion as Female Genocide
Anyway, you can do a further search via google if you like, there are literally hundreds of sources.

Man, I've spent the majority of time on this thread this morning between working from home and stuff.
It's a good excercise though and if nothing else it serves to prove that yeah, we do keep track of what's going on around us.

I've only lived in Nevada for seven years but I can't recall any problems with the cat houses that are in this state. I think there is somewhere around 40 of them. Women don't get beaten up or raped as often here as in other states.
There was one famous cathouse outside Reno that the IRS owned for a couple of years. They lost money with the real thing so they sold it and went back to screwing us the old way.

Good point...the violence and other negatives associated with prostitution tend not to exist where it is legal.
Make something that has an inelastic demand illegal, and it will be supplied by - criminals, with all the attendant fun they bring.
As far as prostitution itself goes, no society or nation or law in history has ever TRULY eliminated it. Maybe, just maybe, it's time to quit trying and acknowledge reality.
Besides, assuming that the transaction is one betwixt two willing adults, and that it is within the bounds of local decency, no logical reason exists to ban it, even if such a ban worked.

It's tragic. Don't get upset with me for it though. Have a nice day. Don't worry, I'm not upset; I was merely pointing out that legalized prostitution is objectively wrong. Your first comments seem to indicate that you see some utility in such.
