Do you think the shuttle will fly in '04?

Do you think the shuttle will fly in '04? Just my somewhat uninformed opinion? Kind of doubt it- the way they are talking about abandoning Hubble due to expenses & risks using the shuttle, I think NASA views it as a flying bomb waiting to go off again in their collective faces.

We were talking about this at work yesterday. Most said they would climb on board if NASA let them. But I think you're right, politically it ain't gonna happen this year and maybe the shuttle, as we know it, is done.

and maybe the shuttle, as we know it, is done. I suspect that's true. The shuttle had its day, but it is awfully old technology now, and we need a better way to get more- men & materiels- aloft.
It really helps to have a high-level character like the President mention and promote Space- I was amazed to see my local TV news anchors discuss, and run a report on, the feasability of the space elevator, just a couple of days ago.

The shuttle is slated to fly once, maybe twice in fall '04.

Do you believe it will?

yep, I think they really will, and two if they can get it in. But they realized after Challenger and were refreshed after Columbia that the space shuttle is not a shuttle to space, and they aren't going to do anymore throw away missions like keeping up the obsolete Hubble.
I think they really realize that the space shuttle is a fickle thing, and not especially safe, so they are going to treat it like that. I really hope they go through with Bush's plan and replace the shuttle with a modular capsule CEV, and as soon as possible. Actually, I hope I can become an aerospace engineer and help them make it.
