We were talking about this at work yesterday. Most said they would climb on board if NASA let them. But I think you're right, politically it ain't gonna happen this year and maybe the shuttle, as we know it, is done.

I suspect that's true. The shuttle had its day, but it is awfully old technology now, and we need a better way to get more- men & materiels- aloft.

It really helps to have a high-level character like the President mention and promote Space- I was amazed to see my local TV news anchors discuss, and run a report on, the feasability of the space elevator, just a couple of days ago.
