"Sean, I was talking about a source, not a price. It is clear that OBL had the $, just needed a source. If Russia is using OBL, then why not sell him some nukes."

And that is exacly what I am telling you. They did sell him nukes, several of them, for $30 million in cash and $70 million in Afghan opium. Some of the nukes sold were suitcase types, and some were actual warheads or bombs.

Read the book.

Cal I really don't know that much about the relationship between the EU and Russia except to say that with the exception of Britain, I see the EU as becoming a significant economic competitor to the US.

If one is to accept that Communism wants to dominate the world as has been stated by Marx, Lenin etc. then I would think that they would much prefer doing it through social and economic means as opposed to war. What better way than by crippling or destroying the U.S. dollar? With the advent of the Euro, and China sucking up oil like there is no tomorrow, the EU is going to need reliable sources of oil for the near future. As they become more dependent on oil reserves controlled by Russia, they will be paying for it with Euros. If Russia were to ever go to the Euro, it could prove devastating for our dollar and economy. IMHO of course. :)

This is the most intelligent and informative post of all 20,000 plus!

This is truly a sub-nation conflict. The enemy claims no nationality. He moves from country to country, often recieving support and intel from sympathetic forces within governments. Most importantly, he gives those rogue governments deniability. His allegiance is to a perverted form of one religion. He plays on class warfare and religion to get support from locals, and he thrives on their ignorance. More importantly, he is propelled by his own ignorance and fanaticism.

This enemy also breeds future soldiers with his hate and propaganda.

He leaves us in quite a quandary, because he is subnational. While this thread has focused on every possible terrorist attack, including WMD's, few if any have asked the real question.

What happens if they do blow-up a U.S. city? Against who do we retaliate? In a traditional war, we have a nation state to bomb? Here we are left chasing the faceless enemy of Al Queada. In my view, it is the perfect setup to fight us. They hide while their allies in terror and in support, have plausible deniability. We are left only to change our whole society in defense.

Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful post on the nature of this conflict. I think Bush needs to sell and say this more, so people understand WWIII or IV, is underway.

BINGO!!!!

Spetznaz = Russian Special Forces.
GRU = Russian military intelligence

This is not a dead horse to be beaten. This is a Trojan Horse.

Remember, if the Trojan's had known the Greeks were in the Horse they'd have been around a while longer.

I believe in reciprocity.

No one here pretends to have THE answer(s). We are all expressing ideas and OPINIONS which you seem to take personally if you don't agree with them, but that's what makes this thread so interesting and intriguing. With very few exceptions (You being one of them) have I seen anyone disagree with a posted idea or hypothesis without respect and courtesy. Why are you so combative and sarcastic in your posts?

It is of little value for me to argue with you regarding your perceptions of me. However, I would like to make two points. First, respect is earned, not granted. NEIN lost any semblance of respect when they tried to pawn off a photo of a helicopter with a brush cutting attachment as a NEST helicopter looking for nuclear weapons with a "flux capacitor" or some such. Second, many people on this thread DO profess to have the answers, and keep coming up with excuses when their "answers" fall flat.

It amazes me (OK, not really) that so many posters to this thread give some person with the handle EOM such great credence, when his mere existence flies in the face of reason. It does impress me, however, that 15 or so Freepers can create so many posts, all stemming from a DEBKA article that has completely lost any relevance.

Don't take me seriously...I could care less. Quite honestly, you guys will dismiss anything I say that files in the face of your "reason" and expectations. However, that does not mean that I can not refute what I deem to be ridiculous "theroies", even if I have to spell out the reasons for their ridiculousosity. Besides, you guys need some disent in these threads. What good is a theory if it can not withstand some challenge?

>>>with the exception of Britain, I see the EU as becoming a significant economic competitor to the US.

This is where I get confused. I know the former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia implemented a Vision 2020 back in '00? '99? '98?

The purpose was to tip world powers. The PC version is just growth milestones.

Then EU wants dominance, one money, one language, one world.

Russia's yard sales are hysterical. Their finger prints are all over the NGOs.

I would love for someone to decode the rest of those cables.

Dissent and disagreement is prevalent throughout this thread and is welcomed.

Personal attacks and insults are not.

Your failure to see that posting a disagreement with civility and without personal insults is good for debate and the exchange of ideas is lost on me.

Thanks for the compliment. I also thought this was a most thought provoking article that I had not seen anywhere before. I was thinking that our thread has lost it's way, we are way off topic with Russia IMHO. I grew up with the cold war Russian threat of nuclear war and I'm not going through that again. Also, a few have now resorted to bashing each others posts which is not what we started out to do here. This thread has been sort of a rock to hold onto during these times of one threat after another from AQ. Somehow, working together here on that has given us all a sense of having some power in our destiny.

Let's not forget some of the dates have passed, and I frankly don't think the dates are all that important threat wise. The important thing is that they LIVE to kill us, they have tasted our blood and they want MORE. Our DHS and others have been very vigilant and may have thwarted attacks, we may never know. But there are and will be more plans from the terrorists, we can be sure of that.

around 230 years ago, the great writer Thomas Paine, who we all stupied (or certainly should have studied) in American history made the following comments. These comments are just as relevant and thought provoking today as they were for our ancestors when this country was in its infancy. In his days, the enemy was Great Britain, but by substituting Al Qaeda for Britain, I think the same meanings apply.

(Yes I am a history buff - because I do truly believe we must learn from our history so we do not repeat it.)

"THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."

In discussing freedom from tyranny, Paine says: "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value."

"The present winter is worth an age, if rightly employed; but, if lost or neglected, the whole continent will partake of the evil; "

And finally, I bring you these two final quotes from Paine:
"'Tis surprising to see how rapidly a panic will sometimes run through a country. All nations and ages have been subject to them. Britain has trembled like an ague at the report of a French fleet of flat-bottomed boats; and in the fourteenth [fifteenth] century the whole English army, after ravaging the kingdom of France, was driven back like men petrified with fear; and this brave exploit was performed by a few broken forces collected and headed by a woman, Joan of Arc. Would that heaven might inspire some Jersey maid to spirit up her countrymen, and save her fair fellow sufferers from ravage and ravishment! Yet panics, in some cases, have their uses; they produce as much good as hurt. Their duration is always short; the mind soon grows through them, and acquires a firmer habit than before. But their peculiar advantage is, that they are the touchstones of sincerity and hypocrisy, and bring things and men to light, which might otherwise have lain forever undiscovered. In fact, they have the same effect on secret traitors, which an imaginary apparition would have upon a private murderer. They sift out the hidden thoughts of man, and hold them up in public to the world. Many a disguised Tory has lately shown his head, that shall penitentially solemnize with curses the day on which Howe arrived upon the Delaware."

and

"There are cases which cannot be overdone by language, and this is one. There are persons, too, who see not the full extent of the evil which threatens them; they solace themselves with hopes that the enemy, if he succeed, will be merciful. It is the madness of folly, to expect mercy from those who have refused to do justice; and even mercy, where conquest is the object, is only a trick of war; the cunning of the fox is as murderous as the violence of the wolf, and we ought to guard equally against both."

You can read Thomas Paine at the Gutenburg Project at http://www.gutenberg.net/etext03/twtp110.txt

Actually perhaps Osama Bin Laden needs to read the following words of Thomas Paine: "When I put all the
circumstances together which ought to be taken, I laugh at your notion of conquering America. Because you lived in a little country, where an army might run over the whole in a few days, and where a single company of soldiers might put a multitude to the rout, you expected to find it the same here. It is plain that you brought over with you all the narrow notions you were bred up with, and imagined that a proclamation in the king's name was to do great things;.... We may be surprised by events we did not expect, and in that interval of recollection you may gain some temporary advantage: such was the case a few weeks ago, but we soon ripen again into reason, collect our strength, and while you are preparing for a triumph, we come upon you with a defeat. Such it has been, and such it would be were you to
try it a hundred times over."
