ARTICLE SNIPPET: "McLEAN, Va. (AP) - Gov. Mark R. Warner plans to keep convicted snipers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo in the state so prosecutors can put them on trial again and seek the death penalty, despite several states' requests for the men's extradition.


Malvo and Muhammad were convicted last year for their roles in the October 2002 sniper spree that terrorized the Washington region and left 10 people dead. A Virginia Beach jury recommended a death sentence for Muhammad; Malvo, 18, was given a life term by a jury in Chesapeake.


Several other states, including Alabama, Louisiana and Maryland, have sought extradition of the pair for murders they allegedly committed. Maryland law does not allow Malvo to be punished by death because he was only 17 years old at the time of the sniper killings."

Search underway for missing plane

January 27, 2004

A SEARCH began today in waters off far north NSW for a light plane which authorities fear may have crashed.

An Australian search and rescue spokesman said a six-seat Aerostar, carrying two people, left Coolangatta airport earlier today.

The plane was due back at a flying school this afternoon but authorities were called in after it was two hours late.

The plane was travelling over waters between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay in far north NSW.

A search has started with two helicopters scouring water over the scheduled plane's route.

The search will be expanded to include more helicopters and vessels.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ISLAMABAD - A DNA test has confirmed that Ahmed Said Khadr, a Canadian long wanted by authorities for his suspected ties to Osama bin Laden, was among those killed by Pakistani security forces three months ago in a shootout near the Afghanistan border, the National Post has learned.
