Sounds as if both methods were indirect to me.

Looks like this article leans pretty hard towards the ESA doing it better.
I think when it comes to space exploration, we're all Earthlings.

I'll buy that - except most sheep don't care about space, except in the context of competition. It took Sputnik to like a fire under behinds in the first place.

One image showed an area of the surface that had collapsed, almost certainly because of ice melting beneath it
Bush and his radical agenga are now causing global warming on Mars! We should have signed Kyoto. . . :)

Who first figured out that Mars had polar ice caps? Upon this discovery, shouldn't it have been glaringly obvious that Mars had/has water?
Methinks that discovery was either American or Russian, but not Eurotrash.

"Previous measurements have been indirect and this is the first time we have direct indications of molecules that are present in water. Both of these groups of scientists might think about wandering down to the philosophy dept and spending a few minutes with almost anyone they might meet there. Surprising the Brits aren't a little more on their game in this respect.

it have been glaringly obvious that Mars had/has water? The polar caps were known to be frozen CO2. Now it is known there is some H2O mixed in.

Their color representation is mostly artistic. SAR images are kind of interesting in that they can be manipulated in data-processing ways to look 3-D even though they are not 'pictures.'

I believe that the white substance in the image has been thought to be frozen CO2 (dry ice) rather than water ice.

So what? Every single Hubble or Chandra image we exclaim over is processed and dressed up as well.
To: djf
They are talking about water beneath the suface in non polar regions. However, this trace was toward the south polar region.
