It's obvious to me, that we should have heard from a spokes person from the Armed Females of America,

The Wilmette homeowner had done all the defensive measures the police recommend, yet still suffered two home invasions. He had the locks, lights, dog and alarms.

It wasn't until he used his handgun in self-defense in fear of his and other lives that the burglar was stopped. Call 911 and get a report for insurance or death certificate purposes. Use S&W and save your life and property.

It strikes me that when a police chief says this, he is really expressing a desire to see all civilians unarmed to increase the safety of the beat cops that he supervises. So yes, the homes are safer-- but only in the sense that a cop called to the scene of a suspicious event at a home is slightly less likely to gun the homeowner(s) down, under one mistaken assumption or another.
