President Bush will deliver the annual State of the Union this evening at 9:01pm (Eastern Time). The speech will be webcast live on the White House web site.

The President will discuss the extraordinary challenges our country has faced and the historic achievements we have made. Yet he will also stress that there.s much more for our country to do:

"America this evening is a Nation called to great responsibilities. And we are rising to meet them…"

"We have not come all this way – through tragedy, and trial, and war – only to falter and leave our work unfinished. Americans are rising to the tasks of history, and they expect the same of us."

He will also remind the American people that we are a Nation still at war, and our government is meeting its responsibility to protect the American people:

"Our greatest responsibility is the active defense of the American people. Twenty-eight months have passed since September 11, 2001 – over two years without an attack on American soil – and it is tempting to believe that the danger is behind us. That hope is understandable, comforting – and false."

"...America is on the offensive against the terrorists..."

"As part of the offensive against terror, we are also confronting the regimes that harbor and support terrorists, and could supply them with nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons…"

"...Because of American leadership and resolve, the world is changing for the better…"

He will discuss the progress we’re making in Afghanistan and Iraq, and renew our commitment to ensuring those countries are free and peaceful:

"The men and women of Afghanistan are building a nation that is free, and proud, and fighting terror…"

"The work of building a new Iraq is hard, and it is right. And America has always been willing to do what it takes for what is right."

On priorities here at home, the President will discuss why he’s optimistic about our growing economy, and call on Congress to take action that will help turn our economic recovery into a lasting recovery. He will call on them to help train Americans for the jobs of the 21st Century:

"America’s growing economy is also a changing economy. As technology transforms the way almost every job is done, America becomes more productive, and workers need new skills… We must respond by helping more Americans gain the skills to find good jobs in our new economy."

President Bush will also discuss the importance of health care and the major cause for why Americans lack health insurance: the rising costs of health care.

"On the critical issue of health care, our goal is to ensure that Americans can choose and afford private health care coverage that best fits their individual needs. To make insurance more affordable, Congress must act to address rapidly rising health care costs."

Finally, the President will argue that in a time of great change in our country and world, the things that make our country strong should never change:

"We are living in a time of great change… Yet some things endure – courage and compassion, reverence and integrity, respect for differences of faith and race. The values we try to live by never change. And they are instilled in us by fundamental institutions, such as families, and schools, and religious congregations. These institutions – the unseen pillars of civilization – must remain strong in America…"

"All of us – parents, schools, government – must work together to counter the negative influence of the culture, and to send the right messages to our children."

"The President shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."

Here is what I want to share:

Most of us wouldn't be here if we weren't extremists. Some of us are extremist Republicans, and tend to be Bushbots, and some of us are extremist conservatives and/or libertarians, which tend to be Bush-bashers. It's a division between those whose loyalty is to party and those whose loyalty is to principle.

THANKS for your kind comment. It's much appreciated. You must know a cast of thousands hereon probably beg to differ with you.

And, I am sure Christ is more accurate about my alleged goodness when He calls The Father alone good.

Nevertheless, you do a real trooper's job in behalf of The Republic, and our FR community. And I GREATLY appreciate it.

I also think that even conservatives ought to be free to be somewhat flexible and relatively broad minded in facing evidence, forming hypotheses and construing reality--as long as we can still have the core values relatively in common. I still see you well within those boundaries.

Besides all that, I just like you, enjoy you and greatly like having you around.

And the long terror thread is a WONDERFUL, NEEDED JOB. THANKS BIG.

FWIW.

"And who might they be?"

Try this, one of the few times that I see eye to eye with Pat.

Or try reading the materials related to Islamic extremism posted on this site.

What the Wahabbi extremists are trying to accomplish, is to create an atmosphere of world-wide repression of the Islamic faith, the parsed bits of the Holy Qur'an that are constantly passed around on the Internet, are the same parsed bits that Islamic extremist clerics teach to their illiterate pupils, their goal, as Pat says, being to instigate a world-wide war, which would unify Muslims, and create a Caliphate with Wahabbi extremists at its head.

I could parse the Old Testament, and make it appear to people who are not acquainted with Christianity, that Christians are every bit as evil and violent, but we know that we are not, so we can easily deflect the arguments. We are not versed in the Qur'an, and what we don't realize, is that those parsed bits that we read are part of a bigger story, most of them instructing Muslims to fight against anyone who wishes to suppress their practice of Islam, or to repel invaders.

Sorry, but I don't agree with a single part of your argument, and neither do I agree with Pat Buchanan's.

Not a very rational response from a normally rational individual.

What is it exactly that you do not agree with?

That the overwhelming majority of Muslims are not terrorists or violent?

Well, eighty percent of the world's Muslims live in Indonesia...but 98% of the terrorists of the world come from the Middle east.

Do you not agree that The Qur'an directs Muslims to fight anyone who threatens their ability to practice their beliefs?

Then you know very little about Islam, and you haven't read past the parsed quotes.

Do you not believe that there is no unifying Caliphate since Turkey dissolved the very innefective remains of it some fifty years ago?

Then you do not know history.

That Wahabbi extremists are at the heart of most Islamic extremism?

Then you're not acknowledging the well-known fact that all 9/11 terrorists were Wahabbis, as is Usama bin Laden.

Do you not agree that their goal is to initiate a world wide war between religions?

Then you haven't paid attention to their repeatedly stated goals.

Not a very rational response from a normally rational individual.

First of all, I apologize for being so brief, but I know your arguments forward and backward, and I just don't buy them. There is nothing rational about my response, so I don't see the point in trying to persuade you with logic, at least not today.

Why should I be denied tax breaks, etc, because I choose to remain a single male with no children

You obviously have NOT heard of the marriage penalty!!!! YOU ARE THE ONE GETTING THE BREAK!

What if there is a birth-control failure?
