Congresswoman will not seek the seat held by Bob Graham, GOP leaders say
By John Kennedy | Tallahassee Bureau Posted January 16, 2004
TALLAHASSEE -- Katherine Harris is expected to announce today that she will not run for U.S. Senate, key Republican leaders told the Orlando Sentinel Thursday night.
After weeks of speculation about her political future, Harris apparently has decided to stay out of the crowded GOP primary field, although at least one party source conceded that she could change her mind.
As part of what were described as "delicate" discussions with GOP leaders, Harris will instead seek a second term in the U.S. House and likely will run for the seat now held by Florida Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2006.
Harris herself was saying little.

I'm glad. Didn't she just win a House seat? Let her consolidate that for the time being.
The last time I saw her on TV I thought her presence was weak, stilted.

Not a bad idea- take away the democrats seat with your strongest candidate
I thine the GOP thinks she will win, so they want to use her when it is beeter to unseat a democrat.

It would be in her and Bush's best interest to not have her on the ballot.

Good decision, maybe not for her, but certainly for Pres. Bush.
No need to get the chad counters in an uproar.

Let her get two more years of experience in the House, and then run in 2006. If W wins Florida in 2004, that will erase much of the whole 2000 kerfuffle, and she'll have a much stronger shot at a win.
I expect that she will be a good soldier and campaign for whoever gets the GOP nod this year (Martinez?). She can put her fundraising skills to work without being the nominee. And I expect she's negotiated the backing of Bush and the GOP for a 2006 run.

I think this is good.
She is a young Congresscritter. Why not wait a few years to move up.
Also, why drag up Bush/Gore 2000 for all the Pat Buchanan voters in Florida?
Mel Martinez looks strong and seems at first glance a pretty good candidate.

White House officials reportedly have discouraged Harris and encouraged a run by Mel Martinez, who quit his job as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development to explore a run for the Florida seat.

National Review predicted just this -- she would run in 2006 against Nelson. Probably better all around. We won't have the foaming Democrats in Florida and can Florida can focus on the race in 2006 without being distracted by a presidential race.
Plus, 2 more years won't hurt her.
To: ClintonBeGone
But that wasn't my question. Your question looks to be moot.

Why, because the media attacked her for doing the right thing?

I agree with this assessemnt.
While the GOP needs the numbers more in the Senate than in the House, it is probably better for her to put in another term. Bill Nelson's seat is up in 2006 and depending on what the reaction is to the demoKOOKs actions since the 2002 elections (which seems to get stranger and more anti-American with time), it might be possible to win that seat.
The problem is: whose the strongest GOP candidate to vie for the empty Graham seat?

I came away with the same feeling. She has potential for a Senate seat but not now.

Your question looks to be moot.
Perhaps. But it's still a legitimate inquiry.
