We should build a suspension bridge linking North America and Europe
As we ponder going to the Moon again and to Mars, I started to think of projects we Americans can do that can better our lives and the planet.
I propose a suspension bridge be built starting from St. John's in Newfoundland, Canada terminating in Galway, Ireland with a connecting bridge from Belfast to Scotland and on into Europe. This Atlantic Euro-bridge would have two levels of 8 lanes per level and would be able to accommodate freight trucks, passenger vehicles and possibly a freight and passenger train.
The bridge would pay for itself over time via a toll fee.
The airline industry and the ocean freight industry may not like this mover of people and goods but it would be a boon to mankind and to commerce.
It would also help the economically depressed areas of New Foundland, Ireland and Scotland.

Ships would still be competitive with rail and trucks.Yeah, that was the whole point of building ships in the first place (they could go up/down rivers cheaper than land-base modes of transportation, which is one reason why cities built on rivers grew so quickly)

Hey, don't forget the road for the long drive to get to the foot of the bridge from any form of civilization. That's gotta be good for at least a quarter trillion.

A more practical and feasible 'big' project would be our own 'Panama Canal', that could run along the southern border from CA to TX. Once that's done, build another along the northern border from WA to ME. Dump all the excavated dirt in France, just for the hell of it.

Secondly, America's demographic balance needs more Europeans.Oh, I certainly don't argue against that, but let's cheer up. President Bush wants to colonize the moon, so perhaps one day we can have official Lunatics to immigrate here to add to our unofficial ones.

Dump all the excavated dirt in FranceAs long as we have all that dirt, why not just fill in the ocean from Nova Scotia to England. Wouldn't a land bridge be kewl?

And we can pay for improving Nova Scotia, and Ireland and Scotland and....... You forgot Prince Edward Island, pal.
Oh wait, they already have a bridge. Sorry.

"Suspended from what?"
I just figured it out. A 3000 mile suspension bridge would require 60,000 heavy - lift helicopters. two each would hold a 1/10 mile portion of the bridge, one on each side, hovering 24/7.
Logistics such as midair refueling, crew changes, etc., to be determined later.
