SEN. KERRY: ... And, Tim, you can hear the advertisements now; so can I. We saw what they did to challenge the patriotism of Max Cleland, a triple amputee, a man who left three of his limbs on the ground in Vietnam. They challenged his patriotism. His regret is he didnt stand up and fight back.

Am i missing something? It would be rather difficult for Cleland, who had both legs amputated, to "stand up and defend himself."

Actually, we challenged his Iraq policy and his comitment to the WOT.
Like most democrats, Max Cleland is just plain wrong on the most important issue of our generation.
The GOP did a fantastic job on educating his constituancy to that reality, and he lost his re-election.
After 9/11, those democrats who whine about having to show a little patriotism to the country in which they live and serve didn't have enough patriotism before 9/11, and that's the root of the problem.

Not to make fun of an amputee or a verteran, but Kerry really could not have said:
We saw what they did to challenge the patriotism of Max Cleland, a triple amputee, a man who left three of his limbs on the ground in Vietnam. They challenged his patriotism. His regret is he didnt hop up and fight back.
