I know this is somewhat presumptuous that anybody would care, but I found out today that I will be a new father in about 8.75 months. Part of me is scared because I firmly believe that raising a child into a good person is probably the most important thing a person can do in their lives. The only reason I am posting this is that I bet this value is shared by a great many people in this forum, and our anonymity allows a comfortable level of discourse. (Wait, that's two reasons.) Anyway, wish us luck.

Congratulations. I've read through the posts and see many make reference to the various little upheavals one experiences...and those do occur.

I had my first child at 35, and before then had only held a baby maybe twice. I don't know if you're like I was or not, but either way, you're in for some amazing experiences.

There is nothing like the look of total trust in the eyes of one's child looking up at you. There is nothing like hearing questions and observations that cause us to look at our world through fresh new eyes and see things we'd long since forgotten to see. There is nothing like a child who climbs into your lap and says "I love you daddy" with absolutely no guile and then curls up to watch whatever is on TV with you, rather they remotely understand it or not.

God bless, enjoy the experience, it goes fast but will simply amaze you all along the way.

A child is a gift from God, for about 13 years, then they are a sampling of purgatory. I keep hearing it gets better sometime later, but I'm not there yet.

There's an old book called "Every Child Should Have a Chance" and it's written by Dr. Leila Denmark. I read it 15 years ago when my child was young, and I go back and reread it on a regular basis. I don't even know if it's in print anymore.

Dr. Denmark was, up until a few years ago, the oldest practicing pediatrician in the US (Atlanta area-I think she was over 100, and I really don't know if she's still alive or not.)

Anyway, she will make you feel so good about your decision to be a parent, and remind you of the awesome responsibility and privilege it is to grow that baby into adulthood.

P.S. Your pediatrician won't agree with her scheduling and feeding suggestions, but most of the book deals with raising kids into responsible adults.

CONGRATULATIONS! Having a child of your own or adopting a child is the most wonderful experience in life. A child will give you the greatest joy and the greatest concern you will ever know but it awakens a part of your soul which might lie dormant otherwise. The day that baby is placed in your arms, your entire being is focused on the well-being of that unique, one-of-a-kind, little person. You are willing to sacrifice your life for his/hers. Well, that works fine until she is in transition. I swear to god, her head spun around and she told me in a demonic voice "get your hands off me!". Well, I pretty much stayed out of it at that point and everything went fine. Man, can I relate to that! Now we have three daughters, going on 24 years. Life is GOOD.

Awesome responsibility, bearing and raising a child, but a miracle and a gift from God all the same. Just remember that when he/she gets to be about 13 and you really start losing your marbles.
