I am getting some very interesting sub-harmonics in my reader e-mail about the immigration thing. People are angry all over; but I am getting a fair amount of e-mail from people who are NOT angry, don't see what all the fuss is about, and are fine with massive illegal immigration from Mexico. A disproportionate number of these what's-the-fuss people write from Texas. Is Texas "special" in this regard? As compared to, say, California? One reader suggests that Texans have a much better-rooted sense of who they are than Californians do (heck, Texas was briefly a nation, wasn't it?), and so are comparatively insouciant about sharing their land with their neighbors. Is this right? If so, it throws an interesting light on GWB's attitudes.

I am probably going to regret posting this as my "my comments" gets innundated, but while the insquabbling amongst all of us is a huge downer to me, debates over the reason why things are the way they are always interest me.
So here goes...

California has the problem because of the state's largesse towards everyone, legal or otherwise. Want your state to be less of a magnet for illegals? Cut welfare benefits. Funny how the unappeaseables never mention that.

As a native Californian who chose to become a Texan, I find that:
1. Yes. Texas is special. Some of us consider it heaven.
2. We're Texans first, and choose to associate with the 49 lesser states.
3. Immigration has always been a bigger problem in California than it is Texas. Look at the way California has treated Asians (Yick Wo comes to mind).
4. Texas is more than a place. It is a state of mind. Those who get it are welcomed by those who were born here.
Flame away.

Never ask a man where he is from. If he is from Texas he will tell you, otherwise you would not want to embarress him.

Texas has some 261,797 sq mi. of area.... and a population of 21,779,893 or so in 2002. So that's only some 83 ppl per sq mi..... Lots of room left yet.

Most Texans that I know are pretty pissed off about it. I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Also I'm willing to admit that there may be aspects to this issue
of which I am unaware or are not yet obvious to the public.
That being said, I'm pretty pissed off about it.

The illegals arriving in Texas are a better class than those in California.

"Texas is more than a place. It is a state of mind. Those who get it are welcomed by those who were born here."Being a former Yankee originally from Michigan, I totally agree. The whole Texas thing kind of rubs off on you after you've been here a few years. Now I just have to get out of the Socialist Republic of Houston and up into east Texas and all will be well. I think Houston and Austin were the only blue areas in the 2000 election.

We're Texans first, and choose to associate with the 49 lesser states Increasingly, my desire to associate with the Lesser 49 is dwindling.
