(SAN DIEGO) – Republican U.S. Senate candidate, Recall Gray Davis Committee Chairman and former State Assemblyman, Howard Kaloogian (website www.HowardForSenate.com, issued the following statement on the entry of Bill Jones into the U.S. Senate race to replace Barbara Boxer:
“I welcome Bill Jones into the Senate race because it will present a clear choice to voters on the important issue of fighting for lower taxes. Our records could not be more different. When California was facing it’s last budget crisis, it was Bill Jones who led the effort in raising taxes – the biggest tax increase of any state in the history of the United States. I opposed that tax increase.
“California taxpayer groups, like the Gann Taxpayer Organization and the National Tax Limitation Committee, support my campaign because they know I am the candidate they can trust not to raise taxes. Those Californians who worked to remove Governor Gray Davis from office for his irresponsible spending are now enthusiastically rallying behind my campaign as well. Come November, Barbara Boxer will be joining Gray Davis in the political has-been heap.”
Thanks for the explanation! I didn't realize there's a difference between filing papers and announcing the beginning of another level of campaigning.
I wonder if the candidates plan to offer opinions on President Bush's illegal alien amnesty proposal or on the new Save our State initiative petition, since CA probably has the most illegal aliens of any state.
I don't know where Jones, Marin or Casey will come out on these two issues though.
Not that stuff. That's what a CAMPAIGN MANAGER does, not the candidate.
Fine. He may win the primary.
But he'll lose the general election--and winning the general election, unfortunately, is a necessary prerequisite to becoming Senator.
I've heard the man speak, and I've watched the crowd. He's great at talking to the party faithful. He bombs with anyone who isn't already a Republican.
One is the real thing, one is just for PR. Generates free press, doncha know.
No, the campaign manager may organize campaign efforts, but the campaign itself is about the personalities that get behind it.
I've never seen a heated televised debate consisting of campaign managers... It's about the candidates. And people don't give money to campaign managers, they give money to candidates. Finally, people don't show up at a rally because they like the organizer, they show up because they like the message and the speakers.
I don't want to sell a good campaign manager short, but I don't know of anyone who is capable of polishing Bill Jones to the point where he is appealing enough to make people want to get off the sofa and go vote.
That's what the Recall was about, taking a message that had little financial support and little support from the political establishment, and working to build it from there. People listened to Howard, felt the energy that Howard brought to the Recall effort, and decided that it was an effort that they were willing to be a part of.
People want to feel like they are a part of something again. They want a candidate that excites them, and drives them to believe that things can get better. Can anyone honestly say that about Bill Jones???
But the first time you listen to Howard speak, you realize that there's something different there. He's motivated, he's exciting, and he's committed to the very ideals that will get people off their sofa and to the polls. That's why Howard will win.

Sorry, no, I had already torn several people to shreds on that point, didn't want to argue it any more but wanted to make it clear where I stand.
BUSH's AMNESTY = POLITICAL SUICIDE? President Bush's treacherous proposal to grant amnesty (legal status!) for millions of criminal illegal aliens could very well backfire at the voting booth in November. Karl Rove, Bush's senior advisor, has insulted conservative and Republican voters (Bush's key base of support) by claiming they have no where else to go. Wrong!! 2004 could be reminiscent of 1996 -- which was the lowest voter turnout in American history since the 1920s -- because many GOP voters stayed home and were not excited about Bob Dole. While it is unthinkable that GOP voters would cast a vote for any Democrat since all the Democrat nominees also support amnesty, we predict that many of them may just sit out this election (or vote third party) since President Bush has now given them one really good reason to not even vote.

You have GOT to be kidding. Northern California is THE MOST CONSERVATIVE part of the state. Boxer will be lucky to get 30% up here. Her votes are in LA and the Bay Area.
