Very good article; thanks for posting it.

I'm not surprised it doesn't have a lot of comments yet. These articles that are very thought-provoking take time to digest.

Meanwhile, as fervently as we hope for quick entrances and safe exits, history teaches us that wars tend to have a force and course of their own, and the more direct and honest our leaders are about that essential truth, the better off we will be.

Since Meacham is such an admirer of Churchill's, perhaps he should recall what he said about a bodyguard of lies. Sounds like a great book,Valin;thank you.As for the reviewer, well, his leftism is glaringly obvious.

Meacham is trying to use one of the deepest thinkers of our time, Victor Davis Hanson, to make Bush appear shallow. For example, the line, "Landing on an aircraft carrier in a flight suit and standing before a banner reading "Mission Accomplished" when men and women are still under fire at the front is not preparing people for the unexpected; it is spinning them in defiance of history.

Who's spinning here? The U.S. military achieved tremendous success by overthrowing a tyrannical and dangerous regime. That mission was accomplished. The sign didn't say, "Vision Accomplished", it said "Mission Accomplished", which it was.

When war is necessary, it's necessary. It was necessary, and we're winning. Now shut up, Meacham, until it's over.

Thanks for the review..

"To Sherman," writes Hanson, "it was wrong to fight at Shiloh, in which his Midwesterners--themselves no abolitionists--were blasted apart while shooting down poor Southern boys who owned neither slaves nor much property.
Far more humane, he grasped, was to burn the estates of the rich and the buildings of the rebel statesmen who had voted for secession; free the slaves who were critical to the Southern economy and whose enslavement had prompted the rebellion; and demonstrate that no Confederate soldier could charge the Union line with the certainty that his government and homeland far to the rear were safe from fire and ruin."

Hanson is [imo] getting close to formulating a new western philosophy of war, -- in which 'we' stop trying to win their "hearts & minds", -- and go to the root of the evil.. --
-- The fanatical leaders whose statist/fascist ideas infect their followers to make war on our human freedoms.

Hansons is a very radical idea, one that once it is truly understood by our own would be 'leaders', will be much resisted. - Bet on it.

Wars will always create ripples that no one but the Allmighty Himself will know about.

That these ripples can sometimes combine and create waves that will be known about, possibly for centurys, shouldn't surprise anyone.
