BBC reports that US Homeland Security officials are reported to be upset that the flights were cancelled so publicly. An unnamed official told the Associated Press news agency security forces had been "hoping that we would be able to lure some of these people in".

The article almost seems to give the French government credit for taking the initiative for cancelling the Air France flights..

In Washington, one U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the U.S. government had been trying to keep the negotiations with France confidential, "hoping that we would be able to lure some of these people in."

great!

just like we lured them into oklahoma city.

So why the heck they didn't let everyone board, take off then laand at some local military airport ...?

If the pilot is the bad guy, that's not likely to happen. There's a good chance that by making this cancellation loudly public so quickly, other known AQ at different locations were spooked and disappeared into the woodwork to jihad another day.

Or maybe not. The press is as much a tool as it is a problem. They can easily be played if necessary.

"But I wonder if we notified the French that terrorists might be on those flights, and they just cancelled them without attempting to find and arrest the terrrorists"

It may workout better this way because I'm sure they've got the passenger lists for all those flights, now they just have to wait and see where the suspected ones scurry off to, then they can grab ahmed and his cousins all together in their rat holes (or is that spider holes) :)

The weirder things look, the safer we are. President Bush warned us that this is not like other war, and we had to trust that they know what they are doing. I trust him and Tom Ridge, and all of the good folks who are working to defend our freedom.

They know exactly what they are doing. This is not the peanut gallery.

They wanted the bad guys to show there hands and board the plane......so we could grab them. Now there are terrorists going deep undercover in France tonight.

In theory that is fine. In fact, at the time of the Lockerbie bombing, State Department officials cancelled their travel, some of us peasants took those seats and DIED. Do you trust the government more or less since that time?

I don't believe anyone should be allowed to fly if they've ever worn a towel on their head. Other than that, I think it's okay for most people to fly.

You just post "flight cancelled" that is how. It can be for mechanical reasons. The terminals are huge. I would not know or care if the flight boarding next to mine were cancelled. So I was driving in Florida and hearing on the radio that the flights were cancelled and I thought WHY AM I HEARING THIS????? WHO LEAKED IT??? THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ON THE NEWS UNTIL 2 DAYS FROM NOW AFTER THE PERPS WERE ROUNDED UP!!

My read is that the French are being sent a message to get on board...pardon the pun.
