Lobbyists working with the White House said Bush is developing a plan that would allow immigrants to cross the border legally if jobs are waiting for them. The sources said the administration also wants to provide a way for some undocumented workers in the United States to move toward legal status.

Bush will try to make the plan more palatable to conservatives by including stricter entry controls, including increased use of technology at the border and steps toward better enforcement of current visa restrictions and reporting requirements, sources said.

The White House plan is being designed by Bush's senior adviser, Karl Rove, in consultation with the domestic policy staff. Sources said the White House's biggest concern is that the new mechanism not penalize people who had followed the law and reward those who had not. McCain's plan, which was introduced in the House by Reps. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), tries to mitigate that problem by creating a new type of visa for previously undocumented workers who would be allowed to live in the United States legally for three years. Then the workers could apply for the temporary worker visa, which would be the path to a green card, or legal permanent residency. That would amount to a three-year advantage for those who entered legally.

You do realize that this amnesty thing would likely only end up allowing illegal Mexicans to become legal, right? (for the most part anyway) If it turns out that they give legal status to hundreds of thousands of hispanics and your friend is left out, will you still defend it? Bush is out to get the hispanic vote. That's why he's working on this. If your friend isn't hispanic, he'll likely be out of luck on this deal.

That's AWWL's and the other yellers modus operandi(Am I allowed to use that word on FR, afterall it comes from Latin, the mother tongue of that evil language, spanish). Other than talk about solutions they just scream that the world is coming to an end.

Personally I think trying to get Mexico's and the other Latin American economies jumpstarted would help, but they would rather scream that the world is coming to an end and think that building a $100 Billion fence and thinking that Mexico doesn't exist is the solution. Ignorance is bliss, I guess, but we have close to a 2,000 mile border with Mexico and that is a hard thing to ignore. Trying to solve this problem ain't going to be easy and yelling incessantly ain't going to solve it either.

I don't support welfare checks for illegals.

But I don't support rounding up and deporting those who are working, contributing, tax paying members of society, I say give them a chance.
