Immigration Reform on Bush Agenda
Washington Post ^ | December 24, 2003 | Mike Allen

< SNIP >

Lobbyists working with the White House said Bush is developing a plan that would allow immigrants to cross the border legally if jobs are waiting for them. The sources said the administration also wants to provide a way for some undocumented workers in the United States to move toward legal status.

Bush will try to make the plan more palatable to conservatives by including stricter entry controls, including increased use of technology at the border and steps toward better enforcement of current visa restrictions and reporting requirements, sources said.

< SNIP >

The White House plan is being designed by Bush's senior adviser, Karl Rove, in consultation with the domestic policy staff. Sources said the White House's biggest concern is that the new mechanism not penalize people who had followed the law and reward those who had not. McCain's plan, which was introduced in the House by Reps. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), tries to mitigate that problem by creating a new type of visa for previously undocumented workers who would be allowed to live in the United States legally for three years. Then the workers could apply for the temporary worker visa, which would be the path to a green card, or legal permanent residency. That would amount to a three-year advantage for those who entered legally.

"More likely he simply knew nothing about the opportunity's for amnesty you cited. I sure didn't.">>>>>>>>

LOL.......I don't know *what* state your friends been in for 17 yrs, but word spreads real fast here in TX (and in MEXICO) anytime there's any talk of another amnesty, or a *new deadline*.

Does it really? Why then do 7 million remain illegal?

And how would you know how fast "talk of amnesty" moves in the immigrant community? Are you part of it? Or do you have that many friends who are here illegal that you are able to keep up on all these things?

Of course neither of these would explain your hostility toward illegal immigrants. Quite the opposite. In fact I don't believe you.

I have known quite a few illegal immigrants in Florida going back to the 1980's. None EVER indicated to me that they were aware of these amnesty programs.

President Bush is dissembling, Bob.

In the long run, what hits the books varies widely with the initial reports. Until then, I'm voting Rep.

Jorge... Stop. Really. Stop.

Do not minimize and relativize the argument down to "Every II is a hardworking, honest person feeding his starving mother.Islamic terrorists in the USA send money home to their poor mothers.

See how absurd these relativism arguments can be made.

Every one of my family members came here and did things the legal way. This is what I expect from today's immigrants. Nothing more, nothing less.

"According to your logic anybody who attempts to better themselves or advance their career is just an evil "greedy" person? "

No, his logic is that anyone who attempts to better themselves or advance their career ILLEGALLY is just an evil greedy person. I tend to agree.

Would you support amnesty for all the American citizens committing tax evasion?

Do illegals only get a pass just because your friend is one?

Do the benefits of people like your friend outweigh the risks of the violent gangs in my town that are 90% illegal aliens? (we have atleast 6 or 7 of those gangs in my 100,000 population town and they have a tendency to shoot people and get away with it)

"You people need to stop making Republicans look like anti-immigrant bigots with these sort of stupid arguments."

That is over the line. YOU need to stop defending criminals that are hurting the middle class citizens in the US JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE HISPANIC.

My last immigrant family members became citizens 5 years ago, the hard way. Your 'criminals deserve amnesty' argument is one thing, but do not call sons of legal immigrants racist. That makes you a race baiting socialist.

The only racism on this thread was the term 'those White Euros"

Did he misrepresent his alien status when he got a job? he's a liar. Did he work off the books and not pay taxes? - he's a thief. Did he present fraudulent documents to obtain a job - he's a criminal. He should spend time in prison for those offenses, have his assets seized and then be booted out of the country - never to return.

Did you ever exceed the speed limit?
Ever jay-walk?
Did you ever photo-copy copy-righted material?

Did you ever spend a minute talking or doing anything non-work related while you were on the clock at your job?

Did you ever gossip? Make a statement about somebody that wasn't 100% true?

Next time you want to run around the FR boards claiming how evil illegal immigrants are, you might want to look in the mirror. And thank God for His mercy.

so the president should stick his finger in the wind and do whats right for the polls?

When "what's right for the polls" is also what's morally right...
yes, if that's what it takes.

were the white euros, who wrote the federalist papers and the declaration of independance, immigrants or not?

Not. All were born prior to Independence, and were British subjects until then. None were immigrants.

Nor were they euros, they were Americans.

Benjamin Franklin was born in Philadelphia.

John Jay was born in New York.

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were born in Virginia.

John Adams was born in Masschuesetts.

Alexander Hamilton was born in a non-American British Colony, the British West Indies.

"Anything or any account you open to move any money will require your ID to be verified ! Try opening a paypal account after 1 Jan and they will require you to fax your drivers license.

Now that is interesting. Veeerry interesting.

It means the fake ID business will boom.

"i want our president to be a leader for all the people, not just the people who vote for him."

So you support a one world government with Bush as the leader?

Of course it's already happening. George Bush and his handlers have deputized Mexican consular officials to decide who get's defacto legal status under their ongoing "matricula"-card stealth amnesty program.

Similarly, the overt amnesty plan Bush and Co. will try to shove down our throats this spring will have been seen and vetted by Mexican officials long before Americans can have a look at it.

>>>BOBTHENAILER you said "but with all the IDIOTIC statements of "I Ain't gonna vote for Bush, or Republicans anymore" because of this 'perception' of amnesty, I gotta wonder..."

Simple.

This is a deal breaker for me, and many other Republicans that I know. I will encourage Congressman Delay to run against Bush II on this issue. Probably fat chance. Then I'll do a write-in for Tancredo in the Republican primary, then I'll vote for the Constitution Party's candidate in the election. I will also encourage all that I know to do this as well. Contributions will follow.

For Bush Sr., I held my nose to vote for him after that "read my lips" lie. Junior doesn't deserve that honor.

If the Republican party violates the rule of law with this egregious violation of existing immigration law, then there's no hope for our country. It's over right here. Time to sell your T-Bills.

Have a nice day.

Does he plan on doing this before or after the election, because...

Ridge's DHS now oversees INS, if he can't get them to do their job, we need a new leader. Remember just after 9/11 NYCPD held 5 middle-easterner's and called the INS on a Saturday and got an answering machine, so the NYPD was forced to let them go because they did not have the right to detain them. The story from PA with 13 illegals in a van this week is another example of the incompetent INS.

Don't know about you, but if I don't do my job, I get fired.

Do you think the matricular counselor I.D is proper identification? Do you think that illegal aliens will be deported without a drivers license?

I don't think so. Therefore, the PatriotAct will only be for Americans. After all, illegals can fly with the counsel I.D. But Americans must show a drivers license or an ID from the state.

Evidently, you haven't flown lately.

"You blame the Republicans for this immigration mess, don't you?"

Well, we have a majority of republicans in the house and senate and a republican president yet we STILL have this immigration mess. Now, they want to make it WORSE. Who do you think should be blamed instead?
