SADDAM HUSSEIN CAPTURED
Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been captured in his home town of Tikrit, according to reports.
There has been no independent verification of the news but Sky New's Foreign Editor Tim Marshall says the source of the news is usually reliable.
The US Defence Department says it has had no confirmation of the claims, which come from Iraqi Kurd leader Jalal Talabani, says the Iran news agency IRNA.
Hundreds of exultant people have taken to the streets of Kirkuk, firing weapons into the air in celebration.
A press conference has been announced for 12pm GMT.
In Baghdad, a spokeswoman for the US-led operation notified reporters that a "very important" announcement will be made at the press conference.

I am also very happy that [if] he was captured not killed.

Saddam (for right now at least) is as safe as a baby in it's mother's arms. We need Saddam very, very alive. He has much to tell us.
Absolutely. My comment was related as to why the Iraqis would kill him now when they wouldn't before.

Dan Rather on suicide watch... Teams of grief counsellors have been parachuted to the homes of Rather, Peter Arnett, and to CNN headquarters... ABC News surrenders to coalition forces.

Works for me. Iraq doesn't have the same contitutional guarantees as we do here, so I have no problem advocating vigilantee justice in this instance...

MSNBC reports candy is being passed out in Tikrit.
That confirms it for me!
(either that or it's Halloween...)

These reports must have hit her and much of the media extremely hard, we should show a little compassion for them (not!)...
The Sunday Morning Talk Shows should be a blast. Bring back HILLARY for a curtain call!!! HA!
Btw, how many posts do you think this thread will be?

A quick review of DU to get the early DNC position (Know thy enemy). Some early exceprts:
-- Well, I might as well go back to bed now. This is all they'll be talking about on the Sunday news, and Bush will be praised all day. I'm happy for the Iraqis, if this is the truth. But even if he's captured, it's still far from over.
-- So if true, it was the Kurds that got him and told the world, not the US troops and the Pentagon media whores reporting. Hmm... but the US will claim the capture.
-- Would Saddam be so foolish as to take refuge in Tikrit? Have they already had him in custody for some time time and are just now announcing it for some political purpose? Why was he captured and not killed like his two sons? This is the beginning of the 2004 presidential race... could there be some political advantage to Bush at this time?
-- They still haven't found Bin-Laden so it would suprise me if they actually found Saddam.
-- Are they going to let him get to trial and let him tell his story and implicate some Bush adminstration people? Or, is there going to be some kind of accident?
-- He's got serious dirt on people. Seriously- don't bet on him making it to trial, IF they let the Hague get ahold of him in the first place (even though he CLEARLY should be there- the US has no jurisdiction over his war crimes). On edit: Man, that would be great if he could take down some of Bushco with him.
-- We've now apparently captured the problem we helped create.
-- Is there some anti-Bush angle to this that we've been missing?
-- Well, outside of the fact that nothing about Hussein's capture changes the ill will felt towards America for our unilateral action, all the dead Iraqi civilians, the dead American soldiers, the crumbling infrastructure and so on, and will likely do little to curb the violence in the country...then no, there's no anti-Bush angle to it.
-- CNN anchor says that while the capture of Saddam Hussein will likely play very well in the United States, it probably won't make a hill of beans to the Iraqis.
-- At least the buzz of this will have cooled-down by the time Nov 2 rolls around again.
-- Mixed blessing, I'm glad Saddam has been captured, but I don't think we'll ever hear the end of this from the repugs. I'm dreading the next few weeks.
Now I need another shower.
