I have tryed sam-e in the past. Personally I believe you have to purchase a QUALITY brand. It is probably 2 times as expensive as L-tryptophan. Which is no problem if you have the funds!!

Then one night... I heard an AA/NA oldtimer describe his life at that point as happy, joyous and free. I could see it in him and I wanted it. So, I went up to him and asked him how. He said, in general.. stop struggling. Find a Higher Power and surrender to it. When you do... a wonderful thing called intuition will occur. Listen to it . And if your smart... you'll try to never lose it. Some pretty incredible people in the program.

I have done my best to find the way to surrender. Maybe it's not in my nature.

I remember the joke about the guy in the flood who's praying God will save him. A helicopter hovers overhead and drops a rope. The man waves them off saying he's praying for God to save him. When he is finally swept away and comes to meet God he asks God why He let him down. God responds,"Who do you think sent the helicopter".

My question is how do you surrender when there somemany things that look like helicopters when in fact they aren't. How do you know when to let God come in and totally surrender and when to, like the drowning man, reach for something. Not all those life savers are from God.

I watched a tv show last night when the preacher kept saying that in order to receive God's gifts we must be in a spirit of receipt. He never said how to get there or what it is you must do.

I struggle with this. I talk about it with my wife. She can't explain it.

Joe... Maybe it's not in my nature..

Maybe you just haven't found something you TRUST to surrender to. I had to unload a religious childhood and look to nature before I found my Higher Power. I found soul affirming evidence of "God" uncorrupted by man everywhere there.

So it was easy to admit then that there was "something greater than myself" that I was in awe of... and that I had no need to be "willful" about... and voila... I surrendered.

I too was brought up from my middle school years in a household strong on religion. I went through a very strong Agnostic phase. Then went through a divorce I didn't want. I turned to faith for restoration. Didn't get it, but also didn't give up. I've since remarried, and the new wife is a strong believer, but not a ram it down your throat type. We have long discussions on her faith and how to improve mine. But when I ask her how she knows what she is doing is right or how she takes direction from God, she draws a blank. That troubles me.

She is a huge fan of a lady by the name of Joyce Meyer. Joyce has a message of positive results if you ask for it to happen. The genetleman I was watching the other evening was Creflo Dollar. He message is very similar. He said you have to be in a position to receive the blessings and gifts of God. My question is how do you get there? I know it's sounds rambling, but it is so difficult to explain.

you have to be in a position to receive....

Hmmm... feet elevated? Standing on one's head? Maybe the old standby..... kneeling. Or even the 69 position cause that can feel like heaven... ; )

I don't know Joe. I do know that the first thing the oldtimer suggested was that I quit struggling.... stop wanting things to happen on my terms... my time.. my way. That is surrender in itself.

A month later and you still miss the point. Fatal diseases kill. Duh. You're blaming the victim instead of the disease.

Georgebushrocks,

I have no idea why you private-freepmailed me out of the blue concerning this thread that is now more than a month old, or why you thought I had any immediate reference to whatever you're talking about, or what past posting(s) you may be referencing.

Obviously, you freepmailed me instead of posting a public reply because you weren't interested in any kind of reasonable dialogue, but merely wanted to berate me and the deceased.

I'm not buying it. Cuss me out in private, and I'll respond in public, where any decent person have addressed me (politely) to start with.

Ive been there - BUT - I never contemplated destroying my kids life because I was "tired" - in fact that is why I didn't...

(snip ugly, explicit language)

Vy the way - since you are so educated - here after is one word - hereafter - dumb ass

I haven't the foggiest idea what you have reference to, nor am I aware that I've ever spelled "hereafter" as two words. If I did, it was a typo, which you obviously aren't immune from since there are at least three in your brief messages to me.

In any event, to quote Forrest Gump... "My momma always told me, 'Stupid is as stupid does.'"

(Incidentally, I find it pretty funny that you freepmailed me a month after the fact just to be insulting!)

Later, dude.

This is the most amazing threaad I have ever been in FR. At least I can understand whatever hostility is expressed in this thread because we're all talking about death. HOWEVER, I think it's very unfair to characterize someone as being a coward for committing suicide in the midst of intense suffering. People who are alive think of suicide as being cowardly/selfish but someone suffering in the midst of depression doesn't see it that way.

Funny this same thing happened to me in another thread... people sending hostile FReepmail a month after the fact. Oh well...

So you believe suicide is OK? Hope you're not a Christian or anything.

Sincerely,
26-year old cancer survivor

PS- Suicide never crossed my mind, even if I were terminal.

God's excusing is all that should interest anyone. Pretty presumptuous, I'd say.

Well, if the person comitted suicide, regardless of the reason, he's likely in Hell for eternity. Sorry, God's rules, not mine.

IMO, excusing suicide for certain reasons, such as dying or sparing others pain, is a hair's breadth away from excusing abortion to spare a retarded/handicapped child the pain of living. Murder is murder, whether it's of a living person, the unborn, or of the self.

There's no excuse for suicide. And it's not brave or courageous.

I have long believed that a good cure for "depressed" people would be to visit a children's hospital ward that housed cancer patients.

All remnants of "self pity" quickly go out the window, at least for truly good people.
