"Awesome news. His integrity won the day.

Now, I'd like to see his record expunged."

I doubt that he wants to spend anymore time in this PC Feminazi army than he has to - he'll get a great civilian job as a result of all the controversy and perhaps end up as a triple dipper - good on him!!!

XJARHEAD,

If people like us had not raised the roof about this, he would have been keelhauled. There is nothing wrong with righteous outrage vehemently expressed! I think we turned the tide on a travesty of justice in progress.

"Things worked the way they were supposed to."

Might I ask upon what basis you made this statement? It would seem that Col. West turned an ambush into a decisive victory - and for so doing, he is being punished instead of being rewarded??????????????????????

If this is the way things are supposed to work, arguably, we clearly neeed to rework the officer corps and JAG.

Seems to me that his reprimand should be accompanied with a Bronze Star.

"Would this written reprimand have a serious impact on whether he could be promoted in the future?"

Definitely, his career has ended and he knows it.

Maybe there is hope yet for the three Reservist MPs from NE Pennsyvania who supposedly roughed up some Iraqi POWs,
would not submit a guilty plea and will stand trial for court martial in January.

Under this procedure, Col. West would appear before Gen. Odierno. The general would be limited in his punishment options to a written reprimand, forfeiture of pay and confinement to quarters.

Just read this on another post.. but to be honest, I don't think they will take away any pay or confine him to quarters (on the books, but NEVER happens anymore). He will probably get his letter of reprimand and that will be that. There was even this:

Col. West has submitted a retirement request to the division commander. Ultimately, that decision rests with acting Army Secretary Les Brownlee. Mr. Brownlee may retire Col. West at his current rank, or determine he did not serve honorably and retire him at the reduced rank of major.

Again, that is really SEVERE too. That won't happen either. These are all ON THE BOOKS, but you will NOT see this happen in THIS case.

I know it will be out there for discussion, but I just don't see it happening. I think we can all sigh a sigh of relief.

We probably hold troops to a higher standard of conduct than police, and most are kids and there is no union or wall of silence. They are under alot more pressure, too.

I agree with you. I am just happy that things went this well for him. I wonder if he can appeal the decision though.

Good to hear that justice has been served.

It seems that LTC West will get the benefit of his years of service and the US Military gets to ensure that discipline has been maintained, and the Euroweenies hounding us for ICC signatory will be stifled yet again because we will discipline our own.

Great News! ... for a start.

But, now LTC West has a reprimand on his record, where he should have a medal.

Also, where was Dubya in all of this?

Dubya's great at going over to Iraq and showing outward signs of support to our troops. But, when it came to actually doing something substantive for one of them, who had preformed so well was and was under political attack for those actions, Dubya was nowhere to be found. If Dubya really wanted to give our troops a boost on Thanksgiving Day, he would have pinned a medal on LTC west while he was over there. As it is, I have to wonder if his trip to Iraq was not just electioneering.

It's long past time for Dubya to come out and take a stand in support of this American Hero. LTC West's record should be cleared of the reprimand and show instead, that he received a medal. Also, the idiot JAG officer, who brought the charges, should be the one who receives a Presidential reprimand, essentially squashing any hopes that he might have for a career in the military.

How can one President be so all over the board, being so really great in some areas and then represent such a contamination of the gene pool in others? About the time I'm ready to say, "Way to go, Dubya!", he falls flat on his face on some other issue. To me, support of our troops is one of the most important issues and it should include a lot more than just showing up for Thanksgiving dinner.

If people like us had not raised the roof about this, he would have been keelhauled.

Self-congratulations aside, where's your evidence of that? Just because a prosecuting JAG officer wanted to go after him hard doesn't mean that the reviewing authorities in the Army agreed. The assumption that the army brass was uniformly against him is kind of mind-boggling. Are we all so morally superior to those officers who serve in our Army?

How it should've been form the beginning. The attempt to deny him his retirement was disgusting.

Good to hear that justice has been served.

So now it's OK with you that 19.999 equals 20?

A written reprimand is how this should've been handled from the beginning. The attempt to withhold his retirement, forcing him to choose a court martial, was disgusting.

To the loud few who openly wished for West to be drug through the mud. You know who you are. You cussed those of us who supported him I have one question.

How would you like it served?

His punishment does not remove his retirement. A letter of repremand will allow him to stay in longer if he wishes, he will just never be promoted.

I said before that all I wanted to see was some punishment, if that meant him losing his retirement, so be it, but I never was a cheerleader for loss of benefits.

You could reserch that by looking at my posts for the past 6 weeks, but there are an awful lot of them.
