Council Tackles ‘Potty Parity’ Bill

Potty equality for all! That's the cry of two Brooklyn lawmakers who say Jane needs twice as many johns as John.

They've proposed a bill in the City Council that says for every "water closet" - building-code speak for toilet or urinal - offered to men, two should be offered to women.

In regards to potty facilities, "equality" is NOT a good thing. Women need more stalls than men since guys also have the benefit of urinals, and don't take as long to "undress-and-dress". On a practical note, guys shouldn't have to wait on the ladies to get-in and get-out. Happens at fairs, airports, theatres, parks, ...

This is important news for women. Believe me, everytime I've attended a large function there are two-three times the women standing in line than in a men's line. Keep in mind that women also bring the small children in with them as opposed to the man taking the children. Plus, the clothes that woman must pull down before relieving herself. And, frankly, I cannot recall ever seeing a men's line at the potty. I've long believed that it had to be a man that designed potties.

As far as NYC is concerned, I am with you, except in the case of the stadiums. The crowd at Yankees Stadium is typically 5-1 males to females. There is rarely a line at the ladies rooms. In the men's rooms, guys are peeing in the sinks, I kid you not.

Some in the plumbing industry argue that the number of toilets needs to be increased for both sexes.

I am in the "Systems Consulting" industry...I think the amount of "Systems Consulting" purchased "needs to be increased for both sexes", too.

Houston implemented this several years back because of a case in when a woman bust into the mens' room at a civic owned stadium (outside of legal cases like these, the buildings seem to be treated like private property).

Now the ladies laugh as the men have unusually long lines.

It isn't so much that there are larger womens' rooms as there are 2 womens' rooms to every 1 mens' room at some buildings.

Make them unisex (like at Penn) and everybody can be equally miserable (and we don't have to worry about which room to send cross-dressers and transexuals to; everybody has to deal with it). Maybe fewer people would end up using public bathrooms and fewer would need to be constructed.

Getting twice as much as the other group is not "equity." "Equity" would be, well, equal numbers.

If women want to be equal, they should be equal. If they want special consideration for the differences between men and women, that's fine. Just don't call this special consideration "equity."

Another thing with regards to time spent in the bathroom. Men in public restrooms are frequently expected to pee in a trough. No walls, no flusher.

Now us guys know that some women dislike the notion of sitting on public restroom seats and "hover" instead.

If a similar trough could be constructed for women (with perhaps some handrails like on the subways), we could probably "process" the line quicker. Just find some place for the TP (or maybe have a biddet button).

Again, there are things that can be done without "doubling up" on construction. And these notions aren't anything that one sex isn't already being subjected to.

If they had slit trench type johns (to seats) the way the French do in public restrooms, where everyone would either stand or squat, depending on their purpose and/or gender, then we would not have this problem.

And if we could all then bark like dogs....

You're quite right, actually. Women's facilities should have more toilets. A couple of years ago, I was at a function and observed a long line at the women's restroom, but no line at the men's. I suggested to a woman I knew in the line that she and the others just walk into the men's and form another line there.

Bingo! About half the line switched to the men's restroom...just walked in, picked a stall and did their business. The men freaked, but there was nothing they could do.

In reality, the men's urinals were shielded from view, and the stalls were closed stalls, so nobody saw anyone's parts or anything. Everyone got to go, and the lines disappeared.

I suggest this option for any women who find themselves in such long restroom lines. Just walk right into the men's. They'll get over it.
