ZOT! Can there be a serious challenge to Bush in the GOP primaries?
John Buchanan is a journalist and magazine writer based in Miami Beach ^ | november 29, 2003 | john buchanan

I am a nationally published journalist who has been drafted to challenge George W. Bush in the Republican Presidential primaries, beginning in New Hampshire on January 27. My aim is to prompt legitimate debate and genuine new ideas, but I start with a question:

HAS GEORGE W. BUSH BETRAYED TRADITIONAL GOP VALUES?

He has failed in his promise to control spending. Nondefense spending has skyrocketed under Bush. The Congressional Budget Office reported that for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2003, nondefense spending rose 7% – nearly double the 4% discretionary spending caps Bush promised to enforce (Source: Washington Times). Since Bush took office, nondefense spending has leapt 13% -- 21% if spending on the war on terrorism is included. “My impression of Bush,” says Chris Edwards, director of fiscal policy at the libertarian Cato Institute, “is that I’ve never seen him give a speech in which he says government is too big and we need to cut costs.”

He has failed in his promise to keep America strong. Under Bush, U.S. foreign policy and international esteem have reached historic lows. After spending hundreds of billions of dollars since 9/11, the Bush administration has failed to catch Osama bin Laden, failed to find Saddam Hussein, failed to defeat Al Qaeda, and failed to stabilize Iraq after an invasion that his own Pentagon policy adviser, Richard Perle, now admits was “illegal.” As a result, the geopolitical balance of power has been jolted, traditional allies have been severely alienated, and as a result, the European Union – led by Great Britain – is now conducting secret talks about the formation of an EU military force outside NATO.

He has failed in his promise to be a “compassionate conservative.” Perhaps never before has a U.S. President so divided the country, according to a recent Time cover story. Despite Bush’s promise to be “a uniter, not a divider,” he has turned Republican against Democrat, rich against poor, Christian against Muslim. He has eroded our civil liberties and Constitutional rights in the name of “national security” and aided and abetted a corporate elite class in the theft of the Republican Party and the two-century-old values that made it the Party of Lincoln. “Corporations have been enthroned,” Lincoln said presciently before he died. “…An era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudices of the people…until wealth is aggregated in a few hands…and the Republic is destroyed.” Under Bush, Lincoln’s ominous – and accurate – prediction might find its final manifestation unless he and the “neo-con” corporate juggernaut are stopped.

DO YOU AGREE? Please let me know your thoughts. There will be more to come from me, including a detailed platform and agenda for ending the corporate reign in this country, shrinking the federal bureaucracy, and restoring Constitutional freedoms to pre-9/11 levels. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your comments and questions.

From your issues page:

"Overseas, I will rebuild the alliances that made America strong. I will renew our friendship with "old Europe," whose proud history we share.I will strengthen our friendship with our neighbors in North and South America, whose glorious hemisphere we share. And I will create a new friendship with the Muslim world, whose perilous future we share."

Do you really believe that President Bush is the problem and that France, Germany and Saudi Arabia are the answer?

Thank you for standing up for freedom of expression

Shout yourself horse for all I care.

and fundamental democracy

I hate democracy. I support the republic not some stupid mob rule.

One of the primary reasons I accepted the rather implausible request that I run -- on a powerful and singular platform -- is that I want to encourage more participation by "common citizens" in the electoral process.

Did you just call me common buddy?

As a journalist, I feel that every point I make, or will be, can be or is fully documented with unimpeachable information -- as were my Bush-Nazi stories in The New Hampshire Gazette (www.nhgazette.com).

That you are a journalist is suppose to impress me? Frankly I rate them just above politicians and right below lawyers and used car salesmen. Your stuff has been debunked.

Please visit my web site at www.johnbuchanan.org and learn more about my ideas, which are fresh and in the interests of all Americans, not just the special interests -- of both parties.

Yawn. Same old same old. I get sick of this. How many times must we suffer thought the same old "fresh" ideas? You sound exactly like a Democrat and not a Zell Miller type Democrat either.

Thanks again for your voice of support for my voice. It is much appreciated.

Like I said say what you want. No skin off my nose. I however would like to point out that this is not a public but a private web site and your rights are diddly-squat here. Which is the same as your chances of getting my vote. Diddly-squat.

money from the heir to the Miller Beer fortune

That does it for this cat, pal! I was seriously considering a vote for ya during the general election - see the bumpersticker above I designed exclusively for your campaign - but now, forget it! I promised my late grandfather, and old world brewer, that I'll never vote for anyone associated with that pissywater poison! Sorry. No, really!

From your issues page:

He did not trust the people of Florida enough to count every vote; he claimed the White House by persuading the Supreme Court to stop the count of 175,000 uncounted ballots, thus defying the principle of Federalism as well as Democracy.

Are you on furlough from a lunatic asylum?

As for abortion, as the grandson of a Methodist minister, I am personally opposed to abortion. But as a public matter, I support only first trimester and at-risk abortions. As for illegal immigration, I would enforce our borders as energetically as I would homeland security. Gaining control of the flood of illegal immigrants into this country will be one of the seminal issues for the next four years. It must be stopped. So far, the Bush administration has clearly failed to stop it. Finally, as for visas, I would re-vamp and better enforce the entire visa process as a critical matter of national security.
Thank you. Please let me know your reaction to my thoughts, or let me know if you'd like more detail.

He refuses to attend funerals for soldiers killed in Iraq, and prohibits their coffins from being shown on TV.

This is no joking matter, you are treading on dangerous ground. Presidents do not and can not attend the funerals of our dead warriors for reasons apparent even to the brain dead.

The second part is even more serious. The fact that you would like to make political hay out of the caskets of dead warriors returning to America makes is disgusting.

I also think my fellow senior citizens should forego their 400 billion dollar drug boondoggle and that money be spent on national defense. The Patriot Act is indefensible. The Dept of Edu. is still a big waste and border security in the south is a joke. No matter what you may think of corp.America, capitalism and Adam Smith still guide traditional conservatism. I'm sensitive to Marxist overtones in a persons view...Are you sure you harbor none?

Would you ABOLISH THE IRS?...Say yes and I may consider you.

Oh it gets better trust me.

I will create hope for the future by aggressively funding and improving education, protecting the environment, and making high-quality health care available to all.

Now there is a fresh new idea! He is going to throw more money at the problem.

Sheesh! As if these things weren't pricy enough all ready.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha... yea, you are going to shape or move debate in NH.... and Saddam won the War.... You are definately on drugs if you think you are going to shape or mold anything.

A popular sitting president, at a time of war, and a syndicated columnist is going to get the time of day because he's on the ballot opposing him in the primaries.... Its a nice daydream... but wake up.

From your issues page:

As President, I will trust the people to govern themselves as free people in a healthy, open Democracy.

We live in a Constitutional Republic, or at least we are supposed to be. It would be nice if a candidate for the POTUS was cognizant of that factoid.

Sorry, I never made it past this stupid statement. Since when does what others think of you determine how strong you are?

"But mom, all the other kids are doing it. What will they think?"
"Your so right Johnny, my gosh, you would not want to be a leader and do the right thing. Much better that all your friends like you. Here is your pot back."

If this person is serious about running, he better come up with a better script than this.

Contrast this with your post #209 that "homeland security is a sham to help big corporations" and you are either a liar or a hypocrite. Why would you blast homeland security and then say "As for illegal immigration, I would enforce our borders as energetically as I would homeland security."

Bring on the Viking Kitties...
