Author of Saudi Curriculums Advocates Slavery ("Slavery is a part of Islam," prominent scholar says)
Saudi Information Agency ^ | Nov. 7, 2003 | Ali Al-Ahmed

(Washington)… November 7, 2003 …The main author of the Saudi religious curriculum expressed his unequivocal support for the legalization of slavery in one of his lectures recorded on a cassette and obtained exclusively by SIA news.

Leading government cleric Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan is the author of the religious books currently used to teach 5 million Saudi students, both within the and in Saudi schools aboard – including those in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

“Slavery is a part of Islam,” he says in the tape, adding: “Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam.”

Government spokesman Adel Al-Jubeir and other officials have repeatedly claimed religious curriculums are being reformed, but Al-Fawzan’s books continued to be used according to the minister of education’s statements published by Al-Watan daily September 14th, 2003.

Al-Fawzan is member of the Senior Council of Clerics, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious body, a member of the Council of Religious Edicts and Research, the Imam of Prince Mitaeb Mosque in Riyadh, and a professor at Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, the main Wahhabi center of learning in the country.

Al-Fawzan refuted the mainstream Muslim interpretation that Islam worked to abolish slavery by introducing equality between the races.

“They are ignorant, not scholars,” he said of people who express such opinions. “They are merely writers. Whoever says such things is an infidel.”

Al-Fawzan’s most famous book, “Al-Tawheed – Monotheism”, is taught to Saudi high school students. In it, he says that most Muslims are polytheists, and their blood and money are therefore free for the taking by “true Muslims.”

Among Al-Fawzan’s other controversial beliefs is the right to ban the marriage of Arab women to non- Arab Muslims, according to his book “Al-Mulkhas Al-Fiqhee” (“Digest of Law”). He has also issued a fatwa forbidden the watching of TV.

Al-Fwazan is also is a leading opponent of those who seek to introduce change to the Saudi school curriculum. He also claimed that elections and demonstrations are western imitations.

According to Saudi liberal writer and scholar Sheikh Hassan Al-Maliki, Al-Fawzan threatened him with beheading if he continued in his criticism of the extremist Wahhabi interpretation of Islam. Al-Maliki, who worked for the ministry of education, was fired after he wrote a 50- page paper criticizing Al-Fawzan’s book “Al-Tawheed”.

"Wonder what Farrakhan thinks about this."

Farrakhan hasn't "thought" about anything, in decades....
He is at one extreme of the "enslaved blacks" and Jesse Jackson has the other extreme of Democrat "plantation blacks"....

Whether the Saudi's "officially" banned slavery means noting, as slavery is rampant in the country today.

Funny how you don't see slavery in predominantly Chrisitan countries today, but there is slavery in just about every Mohammedan country today.

Also, the vast majority of Southerners were not slave owners.

Please don't encourage the trolls. CJ may be a regular, but if it smells like a troll and sounds like a troll, it's a troll.

Anyone can cut and paste from almost any book to support thier postion. I could use a Chiltons automotive repair manual to support the assertion that horses are made of steel, it doesn't make it true, but it would have written backing.

Just ignore the Christian hating child.

Wonder what Farrakhan thinks about this.

I'm sure Calypso Louie is OK with this as long as he can own him some white Christians.

The Civil War was about states rights.

I don't know much about the reasons for a Civil War but what did Pres. Lincoln want the southern states to do or what were the southern states doing that bothered Lincoln?

If the probelm was states rights what did the northern states lose?

What was this lawyer up to?

I don't think that's fair at all. It is not disputed by biblical scholars that slavery is clearly tolerated in the Bible. It's up to the modern Christian or Jew to decide for themselves how they accommodate that information, but bringing it to light does not make one a Christian hater.

I may be mistaken, however CJ's post was made on a thread concerning modern mohammadean philosophy. His post was a sample of ancient scripture that could be argued to support the position that modern Christians also support the institution of slavery. A ridiculous assertion to say the least, I know of no modern Christian who advocates the enslavement of anyone under any circumstance, ever.

His post was made in an attempt to place mohammedeans and Christians on the same moral plane and that is not only ridiculous, it is a seemingly hateful act. Perhaps he doesn't hate Christians, I can't look into his heart any more than I can yours, but to compare the ancient writings and teachings of Chrisitanity (which are no longer seriously followed by devout Christians) with the current positions of mohammedeans is not consistent with a fondness of the followers of Christ, in my opinion.

I may have overreacted somewhat, but I have little beyond contempt for post and run agitators.

References to 'slave' in the koran:

The Koran

14 matches.

The Cow

  1. [2.178] O you who believe! retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the slain, the free for the free, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female, but if any remission is made to any one by his (aggrieved) brother, then prosecution (for the bloodwit) should be made according to usage, and payment should be made to him in a good manner; this is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy; so whoever exceeds the limit after this he shall have a painful chastisement.

The Women

  1. [4.92] And it does not behoove a believer to kill a believer except by mistake, and whoever kills a believer by mistake, he should free a believing slave, and blood-money should be paid to his people unless they remit it as alms; but if he be from a tribe hostile to you and he is a believer, the freeing of a believing slave (suffices), and if he is from a tribe between whom and you there is a convenant, the blood-money should be paid to his people along with the freeing of a believing slave; but he who cannot find (a slave) should fast for two months successively: a penance from Allah, and Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Yusuf

  1. [12.30] And women in the city said: The chiefs wife seeks her slave to yield himself (to her), surely he has affected her deeply with (his) love; most surely we see her in manifest error.

The Bee

  1. [16.75] Allah sets forth a parable: (consider) a slave, the property of another, (who) has no power over anything, and one whom We have granted from Ourselves a goodly sustenance so he spends from it secretly and openly; are the two alike? (All) praise is due to Allah! Nay, most of them do not know.

The Light

  1. [24.32] And marry those among you who are single and those who are fit among your male slaves and your female slaves; if they are needy, Allah will make them free from want out of His grace; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.
  2. [24.33] And let those who do not find the means to marry keep chaste until Allah makes them free from want out of His grace. And (as for) those who ask for a writing from among those whom your right hands possess, give them the writing if you know any good in them, and give them of the wealth of Allah which He has given you; and do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, when they desire to keep chaste, in order to seek the frail good of this world's life; and whoever compels them, then surely after their compulsion Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

The Companions

  1. [39.29] Allah sets forth an example: There is a slave in whom are (several) partners differing with one another, and there is another slave wholly owned by one man. Are the two alike in condition? (All) praise is due to Allah. Nay! most of them do not know.

The City

  1. [90.13] (It is) the setting free of a slave,

I hate to pick nits but you are quoting mostly Old Testament (ie. pre-Christian) stuff. And the two exceptions actually seem to be addressing slaves themselves, and not slave owners.

Don't think there is an equivilancy.

9We also know that law[1] is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders and liars and perjurers . . .

Corinthians 7 21Were you a slave when you were called? Don't let it trouble you--although if you can gain your freedom, do so.

Christianity has always been anti-slavery.

Of course ending slavery was not the top priority of the early Christians, nor should it have been.
