Clark 'Jokes' Southerners Are 'Stupid'
NewsMax ^ | 11/9/03 | Limbacher

Yet another Democratic presidential candidate has put his foot in his mouth while trying to appeal to Southern voters, and this time it's a Southerner himself, Gen. Wesley Clark.

"All Americans, even if they're from the South and 'stupid,' should be represented," Clark told the New York Daily News on Thursday, in a quote first reported in Sunday editions.

Clark was commenting on ex-Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's attempt to reach out to Confederate flag carrying Southerners - and he prefaced his "stupid Southerners" comment with the qualifier: "This is a joke."

Who knew Gen. Clark was such a comedian.

What's next? Will the Arkansas Rhodes scholar follow his quip about stupid Southerners with more "humorous" stereotyping about Irish drunkards, cheap Jews and lazy blacks?

That would surely spice up the campaign trail.

Once again, liberals display their bottomless hatred of Southerners. If we aren't being portrayed as stupid, lazy hayseeds we are being portrayed as incestuous trash or sodomizers of "city folk." I'm sure this little "joke" played very well with the tolerant, compassionate, progressive elites.

I thought that the 1988 slate of Democratic presidential candidates was the most pathetic assortment ever. I am very quickly revising my opinion. Mike Dukakis must be loving every minute of this.

So, if it's a joke, it's a bad one.

I'm the last person to defend Clark, but this is really nothing. What he is saying is that EVERYBODY deserves representation in Washington. In true Clark fashion, he puts it poorly.

We really need more on this story to provide context.

Another revealing episode in the on-going saga of how the condescending, arrogant Democratic party and their willing accomplices in the elite media really view the South (or, for that matter, anyone they perceive as insufficiently liberal, overminded, or as "progressive" as they are). Southern Whites certainly fill that bill for them!

Don't expect the media attention over this crass remark to last more than a day or two. Can you imagine if a Republican made such an ignorant, flippant remark that insulted a whole class of people? Wait a second....yes I can!! Remember Trent Lott? His off-hand pleasantries at Strom Thurmond's birthday celebration caused a media furor that lasted weeks and forced him to resign his position as Senate Majority Leader!

Do you think any of the media elite will call for Clark to withdraw from the current Democratic nominating circus that - in the immortal words of the Washington Times' Wes Pruden - is starting to resemble the "Gong Show"? Don't hold your breath. That brand of phony "righteous indignation" is reserved for Republicans!

That OK - Southerners have long memories and will take their revenge come Novemnber 2004!

I remember the firestorm when Ross Perot said "you people," when speaking to a black audience. If he'd been saying it to a group of Southerners, it would be considered a non-issue, by the media.

Like I said, is he including himself among "stupid southerners"? Or is he separating himself from the south?

"Good grief, are the Democrats racing to see who can fall off the cliff first?"

Lemming Clark, reporting for duty, sir!

Well, Clark is out so I guess that means Dean will be the challenger... unless Hillary dykes her way into the race.

Now, I like that verb usage! LOL!

'Course I'm just a dumb southerner...

Newsmax's intentional distortion of the quote is pathetic.

I agree. The conservative gripe has always been about the lack of fair press. Clark's a loser and an idiot, no doubt about it, but Newsmax's representation is not fair to him.

Even if coverage is slanted towards conservatives, it's STILL slanted. I'm about done with Newsmax anyway. I've come to the conclusion that all they do is scan FreeRepublic for interesting news tidbits and commentary and recycle them as new articles for 'net publication the next day.
