Al Qaeda again threatens New York, Washington and Los Angeles

A new message was posted in the last few hours by the Jeddah-based al-Qaeda-linked Al-Islah (Reform) society calling on Muslims to flee New York, Washington and Los Angeles in advance of major al Qaeda attacks in those cities. This is revealed by DEBKAfile.

The message accuses the United States of predetermining its end (doom) by its policies. ?The Jews rule the Pentagon by remote control and (are the cause) of Muslims being killed in every corner of the world. The United States should therefore expect more blows.?

The message is signed on behalf of the al Bayan (The Threat) movement by ?your warrior brother, Abul Hassan al Khadrami?.

Our Muslim expert identifies the name of the signatory as belonging to a Yemeni from Hadhrameuth, the Bin Ladens? place of origin where Osama enjoys substantial tribal support.

DEBKAfile?s counter-terror sources stress that warnings appearing on these forums are taken both very seriously and with caution by the intelligence services keeping track of the terrorist network?s electronic traffic.

Last November, Jeddah-based fundamentalist forums addressed a message to an Al Qaeda member, saying whoever understands ? understands; whoever knows, knows, but we are marching towards an operation that will take us to Paradise. Three days later, the Mombasa Paradise hotel was blown up killing 12 Kenyans and 3 Israelis and a failed shoulder-launched Strela anti-air missile missed an Israeli airliner at Mombasa airport.

Took a few hours to catch up, but some interesting points I see in all this:

The attack by Israel on Lebanon, after a clear provocation
by Hizbullah- who appears to share a lot of the same characteristics as Al Qaeda in goals

Confluence of threats from Daleel, EOM Clones, and Jihad Falcon- all with essentially the same message. Some kind of attack is pending.

A new post on CN&V from one of EOM's underlings broadcast in the clear, claiming all teams are in position and waiting for something or other.

It seems it is coming to a head, from all the data streams we are seeing.

THis just reinforces my view that for the jihadis, this is all about sex, uh, women.

Top Saudi Cleric Slams 'Evil' Unveiled Women

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's highest religious authority said Tuesday Saudi women appearing without their veils in the presence of men "cause the doors of evil to open."
His remarks came after Saudi Arabia's leading businesswoman, Lubna Olayan, who delivered the opening speech at an economic conference in the Red Sea port of Jeddah this week, was shown on the front of local newspapers without a headscarf.

"This is prohibited for all. ... I severely condemn this matter and warn of grave consequences. I am pained by such shameful behavior in the country of the two holy mosques," Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh said in remarks carried by the state news agency SPA.

Men and women at the conference were segregated by a screen, but women were able to cross over into the men's section -- portrayed by some Saudi media as a sign of liberalization in the conservative country.

Saudi Arabia, birthplace of Islam, is ruled by an alliance of the House of Saud and powerful Wahhabi religious authorities. Under Saudi's strict Islamic sharia law, women are required to be fully covered in public. Contact with men outside their immediate family is limited.

Sheikh Abdulaziz said those who strayed away from what he called the righteous path should fear God and His punishment. "They cause the doors of evil to open before the people of Islam," SPA quoted him as saying.

"What was published in some newspapers about this being the start of liberating the Saudi woman ... such talk is null and void. One's duty is to obey sharia by complying with orders and shunning that which is forbidden."

Female speakers at the conference called for unlocking the potential of women in the work force. Economists say women make up more than half the graduates from Saudi universities but just five percent of the work force.

The kingdom, facing a wave of militant violence and growing economic challenges, has embarked on a program of cautious reform despite fierce opposition from some religious figures.

Crown Prince Abdullah has promised municipal polls this year, although it is not known if women will be allowed to vote.

WASHINGTON - The nation’s capital is being wrapped in an unusually tight security blanket Tuesday in preparation for President Bush’s State of the Union speech, according to government officials.

Although the State of the Union address is always a tense event for the Secret Service, the lead security agency for the event, owing to the fact that nearly all of the nation’s lawmakers and government officials are located in a single place for an extended period of time, in today’s climate of increased risk of terrorism, precautions are being ratcheted up, officials said Tuesday.

As of 2 p.m. Tuesday the Washington, D.C., police force activated its series of 14 surveillance cameras. The wireless cameras feed into a crisis center staffed by police and other government law enforcement agencies and monitor the capital’s downtown areas. And ringing the Capitol Hill area within a 15-mile radius are mobile anti-aircraft batteries equipped with surface-to-air missiles; Air Force fighters will be on patrol as well.

Two weeks ago Capitol Hill officials staged a mock attack on the Capitol building as one might play out during the State of the Union address. On Jan. 10, a Saturday, the House side of the Capitol was closed and a disaster drill took place with persons playing the president, vice president, Supreme Court justices and other high-ranking officials. Some stand-ins were given symptoms to relay to their rescuers; others were simply told to “play dead.”

The Capitol is ringed by water, and the Coast Guard will be in force to “saturate” the Potomac River and its tributaries, according to a statement the Coast Guard put out Monday.

The Park Police will have extra patrols of mounted and foot police around the Capitol area to help monitor protests that are scheduled, a Park Police notice said.

Inside preparations
As an added measure, each seat in the House chamber has a protective “hood” under the seat. The hoods, wrapped in gold foil bags, are intended to be used in case of a biological or chemical attack on the House itself. The hoods have been under the seats since the fall, according to sources on Capitol Hill who have trained with them.

And finally, the long-standing tradition of grand-standing to be in the camera shot as the president comes into the chamber to speak is being modified. Word went out Tuesday afternoon to all members that no one was allowed to “save seats” on the aisle as a means of trying to assure some on camera face time with the president; no children will be allowed on the floor, either. And once members are inside, they are there for the duration: the doors to the rear and side of the chamber — those used most by members — will be locked during the speech.
