I live 90 miles south of the Canadian/Idaho border. Nothing but woods up here. Do we have satellite or some way our wilderness borders are under surveillance? I sure hope so. If not, they should be.

Didn't OBL take credit for defeating Russia in Afghanistan or something along those lines?I believe you are correct there. What had me concerned, way before 9/11, was the reports of all the unpaid (but still working) Russian nuke plant workers and nuke scientists. Some of them hadn't been paid for months. Supposedly they were desperate enough to sell anything they could siphon off to anyone just to get the money. Lots of nefarious angles there for the bad guys to get their hands on a whole array of stuff.

It is my understanding that long stretches of the Canadian/American border are basically unprotected. There are border checkpoints and some surveillance cameras but they do not cover every mile. I've also heard that some of the cameras are not in working order (great). My brother-in-law lives in Washington, about 15 miles from Canada, in a rural area. He says there are plenty of spots where someone could basically just walk across through the woods. I don't know all of this as fact, just what I have read and heard.

Between the holes in the border and the holes in our security I worry that if they are capable of WMD, we give them the means and opportunity to do it.

Airport Terror Targets?
There are 19,000 general aviation airports in the United States, and most are like Eagle's Nest, with just a single landing strip. There are no fences, no gates, no security systems and no federal requirements to have them.
(CBS) They are a soaring real estate trend: fly-in communities called air parks.
"Every house has a paved taxiway to the runway," says Lesley Hock, an Eagle's Nest Air Park realtor.
Amenities include your very own community airstrip, your own personal hanger and the freedom to come and go as you please.
"There's really no security in regards to living with your airplane," says Hock.
And, as CBS News Correspondent Bob Orr reports, that's the fear. These general aviation airstrips, like the one in Eagle's Nest in western Virginia, are an open invitation for terrorists.
"I think it's a real concern," says airport manager John Trissel. "I think it's a possibility."

Terrorists dance through the leaky border of Canada
By Michelle Malkin
Creators Syndicate
You've seen their mugs plastered on TV: Abid Noraiz Ali, 25; Mustafa Khan Owasi, 33; Iftikhar Khozmai Ali, 21; Adil Pervez, 19; and Akbar Jamal, 28.
According to intelligence sources, these five Middle Eastern or South Asian men are illegal aliens who recently snuck into America from Canada. They allegedly are part of a much larger group of invaders wanted by the FBI for for questioning. Law enforcement agencies want the public's help to track them down, but U.S. and Canadian officials are refusing to tell us exactly how and where they might have entered.
Heaven forbid they give us enough specific information to start holding anybody accountable for the continuing infiltration of immigration outlaws into our country.
So how did the Christmas quintet get in? Here's my invasion scenario:
Paper trail of tears
The journey begins in Pakistan, the operations base for an international smuggling ring that exploits one of Canada' s most notoriously insecure documents - the IMM 1000 immigration form. These forms, the Canadian equivalent of U. S. green cards for legal permanent residents, contain no photos. Just the name and age of the holders. The smugglers buy genuine IMM 1000 forms from Pakistani immigrants in Canada, then illegally peddle them in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Using false identities and bogus passports along with their IMM 1000 documents, the invaders board planes in Pakistan, transit through Dubai, travel through Britain or another European country and touch down at a Canadian airport of entry in Montreal, Vancouver or at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~continued at link

...Just dandy! The trick is to stop them before they get into our country. Another reason to stress the importance of closing our borders. When will Ridge understand this?!!

Cuz it is so impractical. How do you close waterways and forest. I can get in a boat on the canadian border and travel to some fish camp in the USA totaly undetected, impossible to stop if determined and thats what the terrorist would do if you closed the main ports of entry, however, if the main ports are kept open we have a chance to identify these guys and detain them. I think we have caught quite a few trying to get in that way.

Thanks for the Sirya pings earlier today, I just got online. Looks like this wasn't what I predicted. I am still waiting though. I see more stories cropping up today about USA's frustration with Sirya. If I had to put a timeline to it, it would be within 2 weeks. We'll see.
I see a battle in the Bush administration between Powell with his NWO gang vs. Cheney/Rumsfield for moving forward with an offensive attack. ...Just conjecture on my end.

Absolutely. Problem is they can come in by both means, whichever works for them. When my husband and I did a lot of sailing in Puget Sound we were never, not once, stopped/questioned by any authority. Of course we had everything in order boat wise and paperwork wise and we are both white Americans :-)

I agree that it is almost impossible to stop all illegal crossings, but how about a few more planes/helicopters, maybe some cameras, foot patrols??
I just want to see forward progress in respect to protecting our borders. Anything would be welcomed! Citizen patrols. ....Lots of retired folks would love to volunteer, like in WW II, looking out for German subs on the East Coast. At least make an effort to stop this crap, I say.

If there's 2,3 or 4 big booms in the next few weeks he will have to answer to all of us.
I wonder who would be a good Director of HS? We really need someone who will be so tough on these borders and also willing to go after the ones that are already here covered by the media every day instead of Jacko and the rest. (We have sunk back into covering unimportant trash again) I think we need to scare them and shake them up, since it seems they are very sure of themselves.
There should be a non stop 24/7 roundup of anyone who may fit into this group. I don't care about their rights, if they are innocent then they can go.
