ABC: Oswald did it

Network debunks conspiracy theories with digital re-creation

Using a computer-imaging process roughly akin to video games, ABC News has constructed a forensic tableau that it says proves Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in assassinating President John F. Kennedy.

"What it does is prove unequivocally that Oswald was the only person in Dealey Plaza that day to fire," ABC anchor Peter Jennings said this week.

The digital reconstruction, created for the upcoming Nov. 20 special Peter Jennings Reporting: The Kennedy Assassination – Beyond Conspiracy , was the result of a decade of work by author and animator Dale Myers.

Using maps, blueprints of Kennedy's limousine, measurements, about 500 photographs and each frame of the 16mm amateur film shot by Abraham Zapruder in Dealey Plaza, Mr. Myers created a virtual reconstruction of the assassination that can be viewed from multiple viewpoints.

The technique is based on new imaging technology and is beginning to be applied as an evidentiary tool in courtrooms. ABC said Mr. Myers' assassination reconstruction was independently evaluated and endorsed by other forensic analysts.

By viewing the assassination from multiple perspectives, it is an "inescapable conclusion" that the shots that killed Kennedy and wounded Texas Gov. John Connally came from Oswald's perch in the former Texas School Book Depository, said Tom Yellin, executive producer of the special.

In the video re-creation, only Kennedy and Connally are shown in the open limousine they rode in Nov. 22, 1963. "It will be shocking to people to see it. It is not our intent to shock people or use this gratuitously," Mr. Jennings said.

"But in order to have people understand the point we're making – that Oswald acted alone in Dealey Plaza that day, to use this to prove what we are able now to prove – this technique is indispensable," he said. "I am amazed how the animation invokes the real event."

Although the Warren Commission concluded in 1964 that Oswald acted on his own, the Kennedy assassination has been the focus of conspiracy speculation for four decades and has spawned about 500 books. Part of the reason for the public's suspicion is because of government secrecy that for years shrouded details of the event, Mr. Jennings said.

Whatever your opinions of Posner, I found his research thorough and his conclusion sound--but conspiracies are much more fun.

I agree. Oswald was the patsy. Not that it matters a lot. At this point in time there's so much bureaucratic incest covering it up that something like the truth will never see the light of day.

Let's see:

#1: This year is the 40th anniversary

#2: ABC's ratings are circling the drain

OK, I think I've got the picture. :)

Your experience mirrors mine. Zapruder even took a few frames of the fence when he followed the limo. He would have been the first to say that there was someone shooting from there.

The closest people were the three on the fifth floor. Debris from the ceiling rained down on them from the three shots. They even heard the brass hit the floor.

BTW, I once met Carlos Marcello, and actually (really) asked him about it... he toked his big cigar and smiled and said nothing...I didn't press the matter...

Wow, you are a far braver person than I! And what a reaction he gave, says a lot, doesn't it?

Let me set the record straight. The thriller "The Usual Suspects" is number *4* on the IMDB female list. My bad.

It's that split second forward motion that is more important. Jackie moved away from the blast too. Are you saying she was hit?

Again, look at it frame by frame.

I always laugh when people say the government is keeping the truth secret. Since when can the governmnet keep anything secret?

Really?

That's funny, since there is nothing that our government does better than keep secrets. Especially military and national security secrets. If the government doesnt want you to know something, you just wont. Before you do, they will let you believe something that you think is the truth to keep you from your own curiousity.

Plato's Cave exists.

Bullshi'ite .... Lee was a good shot but NOBODY connects three times on a moving target with a Carcano rifle like that .... And the winds up moving the rifle across the building and downstairs drinking a coke five minutes later.

Exactly..
But there are those among us that ~insist~ the government did no wrong in the Warren Report, even in the face of the later admissions from commission members that it had an agenda to find no conspiracy.

They forget the 'cold war' was pretty hot, and any hint of foreign assassins could have got it boiling.

I wouldn't believe anything Peter Jennings said if it was quoted by God himself.

Why didn't rapid-fire, pinpoint-accurate oswald take out LBJ too??? Personally, I always thought that this was LBJ's only "shot" at becoming president.

You can't hit a head and shoulders target at 88 yards or less?

And just how long are your coffee breaks anyway?

There is also no defense against those who love the stories told by the powers that be about how they must be believed.

[National security is involved, donchaknow..]

What is important is the immense energy of the bullet being tranferred to JFK's head and driving it back. I have looked at the Zapruder film frame by frame, in slo-mo, backwards, forwards, etc.. A bullet from the rear is not going to "pull" his head back like we see in the film. I am not saying Jackie was hit. I do think though that Oswald did not fire a shot that day. I think he was in the School Book Depository for some reason that day, and that when the shots flew, he realized that he had been set up. He panicked, went home (during which time, a Dallas PD car pulled up and honked, and then left), and then tried to get away before he was apprehended at the Texas theater. When he left his boarding room, he was on a bee-line route to Jack Ruby's apartment. May be coincidence, I don't know, but too many strange things happened that day and soon afterwards to make it a "lone gunman" senario.

Let's see if I have this right:

If we believe the network media, Nancy Reagan slapped her children, Ronald was a homophobe, Jesus had a wife and child and Oswald acted alone.

Or is it Nancy had a wife and child, Jesus slapped children, Oswald was a homophobe and Ronald acted alone? I'm so confused. I need Rush to come back and straighten this out.

A LOSER with a JUNK RIFLE changed history.

It's kind of hard to accept, but that is what happened.

I agree. Lee Harvey Oswald was helped by the same passive conspiracy that assisted the 9/11 hi-jackers: government bureaucracy.
