ABC: Oswald did it

Network debunks conspiracy theories with digital re-creation

Using a computer-imaging process roughly akin to video games, ABC News has constructed a forensic tableau that it says proves Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in assassinating President John F. Kennedy.

"What it does is prove unequivocally that Oswald was the only person in Dealey Plaza that day to fire," ABC anchor Peter Jennings said this week.

The digital reconstruction, created for the upcoming Nov. 20 special Peter Jennings Reporting: The Kennedy Assassination – Beyond Conspiracy , was the result of a decade of work by author and animator Dale Myers.

Using maps, blueprints of Kennedy's limousine, measurements, about 500 photographs and each frame of the 16mm amateur film shot by Abraham Zapruder in Dealey Plaza, Mr. Myers created a virtual reconstruction of the assassination that can be viewed from multiple viewpoints.

The technique is based on new imaging technology and is beginning to be applied as an evidentiary tool in courtrooms. ABC said Mr. Myers' assassination reconstruction was independently evaluated and endorsed by other forensic analysts.

By viewing the assassination from multiple perspectives, it is an "inescapable conclusion" that the shots that killed Kennedy and wounded Texas Gov. John Connally came from Oswald's perch in the former Texas School Book Depository, said Tom Yellin, executive producer of the special.

In the video re-creation, only Kennedy and Connally are shown in the open limousine they rode in Nov. 22, 1963. "It will be shocking to people to see it. It is not our intent to shock people or use this gratuitously," Mr. Jennings said.

"But in order to have people understand the point we're making – that Oswald acted alone in Dealey Plaza that day, to use this to prove what we are able now to prove – this technique is indispensable," he said. "I am amazed how the animation invokes the real event."

Although the Warren Commission concluded in 1964 that Oswald acted on his own, the Kennedy assassination has been the focus of conspiracy speculation for four decades and has spawned about 500 books. Part of the reason for the public's suspicion is because of government secrecy that for years shrouded details of the event, Mr. Jennings said.

We have far to many 'expert shooters' on FR as it is..

Yes "we" do, and you're probably one of them.

Address the timeline of the three Oswald shots,

There are better things to do than speculate on the ridiculous.

No one has, to date.

So what?

You'll be rich & famous.

I don't care.

Maybe you're right. Can you give me an example of something the government was able to keep secret for 40 years? I can think of loads of things the government, or officials of it, wanted to keep secret but couldn't.

Here is a diagram of Dealey Plaza, why oh why would the SS let them make these sharp turns instead of heading straight out Main St.?
117

If memory serves the right turn to the next stop could only be made from Elm..
Main St. only went straight thru the underpass..

Take a look at the other 'grassy knoll' on the Commerce St side..
When I visted the site I was struck by the fact this was a perfect position to take a relatively straight unobstructed oncoming shot at JFK, from behind the plaza's columns. -- Yet this possiblity has never been mentioned..

You can't hit a head and shoulders target at 88 yards or less?

With a POS carcano ? and three in a moving obliquely head ? nope ...

Oswald acted alone and fired the three shots in Daley Plaza that killed Kennedy and wounded Conally. Anything more is simply mental self abuse.

You don't care, and you don't speculate, -- yet you post a comment at 104 that in a way does both..

Whatever.

I stand corrected, it was the carbine. Thank you 2.5
The ones I have handled lately certainly seem capable of making a shot like this in the hands of a skilled shooter.

Graf & Son is now making a commercial soft point round for the carcano.

Personally, I always thought that this was LBJ's only "shot" at becoming president.

Many, many years ago, as a young man, I was hitch-hiking east from Texas. A car, right outside Dallas, picked me up. It was driven by a Texas Ranger who drove me all the way to Memphis. He was going there to pick up a prisoner to return him to Texas. This Ranger, who's name I long ago forgot, had been involved in the Kennedy investigation. I aked him his thoughts and he believed Oswald to be the lone gunman, but he also believed Oswald was working for someone. When I asked him "who", he replied, "Who's the only person that gained anything by Kennedy's murder?" "Johnson", I said. He smiled, nodded and said he was convinced that Johnson set it up. I've always wondered since if he was right.

If you watch the Zapruder film, you can see the back of Kennedy's skull explode as he lurches backward. Jennings needs to explain how a shooter located behind his target can shoot him in the forehead.

Please. We have far to many 'expert shooters' on FR as it is.

As a matter of fact, we do have many marksmen on this forum.

In my younger days I could have made that shot easily, with time left over. Not that I would do such a thing, but someone with the same skills and no conciense could have done it without breaking a sweat.

So there.

Yes, I can. I even have some videos. Would you care to see a friend shoot and hit clay birds standing up 65 yards away? He's using a .500 Limbaugh.

That is a link I just found to a live cam supposedly in the sniper window.
It pans from Houston down to the triple underpass.

Nope. In frame 313 absolutely nothing is happening at the back of JFK's head. Nadda.

If you still think it, post the picture.

If you say so but tell me this.

If Oswald was acting alone as you believe, WHY did he pass up any number of much easier shots to wait for the chance to shoot while the target was accelerating away at a declining angle?

Can I? Yes.

Will I? No. I'm a former Naval Officer, so that wont happen.

But in the spirit of this discussion, I would beg you to consider why conspiracies exist. They cannot exist without fuel. Now, the question is, why do people fuel conspiracies? Could it be that conspiracies are nothing more than a wonderful tool, which help hide truth behind more layers then are apparent?

When people discover a potential conspiracy, that is usually where the search ends. People cease to look for the truth, only the truth of the conspiracy, completely ignoring the facts before their eyes in the process that would otherwise lead to a more sound conclusion.

All we have in this particular case to work with are two plausible answers, with no one ready or willing to consider any others. Were I trying to keep a secret, it would seem to me to be a lot easier to convince people that another divergent secret exists, and point them in that direction to argue over for 40 years, while the original facts die of old age before they can be discovered.
