Professor Appointed to Probe Schiavo Case

By VICKIE CHACHERE
Associated Press Writer
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A judge appointed a University of South Florida professor on Friday to independently investigate the case of a severely brain-damaged woman at the center of a right-to-die battle.
Jay Wolfson, an expert on health care financing, will report to Gov. Jeb Bush and recommend whether the stay the governor enacted to keep Terri Schiavo alive should be allowed to remain.
Schiavo suffered severe brain damage when her heart stopped due to a chemical imbalance and has been in a persistent vegetative state for more than a decade. Doctors have said there is no hope for her recovery.
Her husband, Michael Schiavo, has fought to have her feeding tube removed, saying his wife did not want to be kept alive artificially.
Terri Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, dispute that claim and have fought to keep their daughter alive, saying they believe she could be rehabilitated.
Terri Schiavo's feeding tube was removed for six days in October before the Florida Legislature and Gov. Jeb Bush enacted a special law to have it reinserted. The law also required a guardian to be appointed.
George Felos, the attorney for Michael Schiavo, and the American Civil Liberties Union filed briefs this week challenging the constitutionality of the governor's action. The state is expected to respond on Monday.
The judge said that if the law is found to be unconstitutional, Wolfson is to cease his work.
The Schindlers had objected to Wolfson's appointment, claiming comments he made to a television station indicated he was biased against the newly enacted law. The judge said he found no evidence of bias.
Wolfson did not return calls seeking comment.
The judge ordered Wolfson to report to the governor in 30 days, but said the deadline could be extended if needed.

from the above mentioned article http://www.sptimes.com/News/012500/TampaBay/:
"Her doctors never tested her blood or told her what was wrong, Mrs. Schindler said. >> No basic bloodwork, not a single tube? Unlikely -- is this really true? case went to trial... On Feb. 25, 1990, Michael Schiavo woke up about 5 a.m. to use the bathroom. That's when he saw his wife fall on the floor. Her heart stopped beating and she was deprived of oxygen for five minutes before she was taken to the hospital. >> THIS DIFFERS from other accounts: "woke up to use bathroom"? "he saw"??
Terri Schiavo has not awakened since [? my eyes must be lying, then]..... Terri, meanwhile, has remained in a coma [someone needs to do some homework] through about 100 doctors visits and countless hospital and nursing homes stays. She breathes and sleeps, blinks and smiles.
It is my prayer that many, many people will see more facts about Terri's story. May hard hearts be softened and changed, including the lawyers, judges, doctors, and various experts. May more people come forward with info to help Terri. And may this nightmare finally come to a GOOD end.

Right. This is so very wrong. Thanks for all your work on this.
It's really important for us to document and POST where our nuggets of info come from -- so others can confirm facts, put other info with it. I was getting boggled, trying to put URL w/snippets. Good night !
And good night, fv -- thinking of you all there, keeping you in my prayers -- take care.

OMG. Look how responsive Terri is in that photo #17 from years ago.
I'm completely shocked, don't know how it's possible that anyone could look at that and not ask dozens of questions.
Have you all seen this photo?
Look how far she has fallen since that time.
This is so unjust I don't know what to say.
Poor Terri has languished for so long.

http://www.friendsofterri.org/ has short easy-to-read SUMMARIES of Terri's most compelling evidence.
My favorite:
"THE EXAM" Results of examination at Bayfront Medical Center/Medi-Plex Rehabilitation Center - Terri showing signs of responsiveness and improvement.
Patient is awake and her eyes are open. She is easily startled to her name or when the bedrail fell down ...(there is much more)
Her doctor even put a STAR NEXT TO THIS on her records:
Vocalizing when prone in P.T. Occasionally will say "STOP" to nursing during procedures.

Great Summary!
(May I use it up here in some letters or articles?)
Do we have a summary of the ways he has MISUSED/ABUSED his position as guardian to torment the family and Teri?

Who was the judge that appointed this guy? I know I sent a letter but I don't remember if I just sent it to the courts or if I had sent it to the judge.

Chief Judge David Demers appointed Dr. Jay Wolfson. Read the order to appoint Wolfson here:
http://terrisfight.org/downloads/appointment%20wolfson%20103103.pdf Judge Demers wholeheartedly supports Judge George Greer, the judge who twice ordered Terri's starvation. Wolfson is an advocate for euthanasia and hospice. George Felos and Michael Schiavo approved of Wolfson's appointment.

Bill is always defending the rights of defenseless little children who have been abused, why not a defenseless "child-like" grown person like Terri? There's no difference except numbers on a calendar.

From all I've heard Wolfson is bad choice.

Wasn't Wolfson once charged with attacking a woman? Is he any relation to Lester Wolfson?

I agree with you.
I was under the impression that the law read that the GAL appointment must be agreeable to both sides.

My question is, If he is an expert in the health care financing, why isn't he working in the field?
The ultimate end to this is, when one stops contributing to the government, wheather it is through illness, incapitation, unemployment, ot retirement, they are to be killed.
If Terri is allowed to be killed, it will move this forward at least 10 years.
