I'm familiar with the fire breaks that used to be legal. I am wondering when, exactly, fire breaks became illegal? That is insanity.

Of that, I'm not sure. It is insanity, but I suspect that it is a state issue. Cali is in the heart of the environazis and has (until now) had the left controlling all 3 branches of state government. Anything stupid can happen under those circumstances.

The one thing I do know is that there has been a concerted effort on the part of the far-left to remove all traces of human existence from many national forests. Part of believing in that policy is that many forests haven't had the care they deserve over the last several years. No clearing of underbrush, no thinning, no removal of dead wood, and no fire breaks.

Prayers for the fallen firefighter, his family and the injured. Just got home after a long day and just wanted to say that.

Cars scramble to exit the I-15 freeway to flee the flames of the Cedar fire crosses as it approaches the Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar, California on October 26, 2003. Cooler weather on Wednesday could help exhausted firefighters battling blazes that have raged across southern California and into Mexico, devouring swathes of land and homes and killing at least 18 people. The firefighters hoped to take advantage of a drop in temperatures to try to save mountain communities from being destroyed by the surrounding flames. (USMC/Reuters)

KFI reporting flames continuing to move through parts of Lake Arrowhead. Destroyed more than 200 homes on the far east end of Lake Arrowhead. Cedar Glen is still smoldering and flames still going -- downed power lines hampering their efforts. There is no water in some of the hydrants at Lake Arrowhead.

Santa Clarita -- fire fighters have the upper hand. Just going after hot spots.

UCLA is in West L.A., a very nice section of town, to say the least, and is untouched by any fires. Your daughter will be in cool, foggy weather tomorrow. LAX is to the west and south of UCLA, about a 20 minute drive along the same freeway (the 405). There are no fires ANYWHERE near those areas.

While most city dwellers don't get what the ranchers and rural dwellers have been worried about for years, perhaps this will make everyone take up the cause and we can have a class action lawsuit and cut these groups off once and for all.

That is so true. I grew up in old suburban Cleveland - as a city dweller. Fires, to us, were when a building burned down. The fire was almost always put out on the same day it started. Very rarely did it take more than a day. That is what makes this situation so important.

So, who is going to save Bambi, when the people peel out? F the Sierra Club. Their 15 minutes of fame are over.

More like who's going to save Bambi FROM the Sierra Club. Do they think there are any Bambi's or Kangaroo Rats (did I get that right?) or other endangered species surviving the holocaust they've created? Those poor species have a better chance of surviving if people are managing the land rather than disregarding it.

It is physically POSSIBLE to log any forest.

The enviros stop as many logging plans as they can. They have a great number of pending lawsuits right now, to keep ranchers from grazing on public lands with the grazing rights they have had for a LLOOOOOOONG time. They have stopped logging on PRIVATE property. This is a crop- no different than strawberries, celery, tomatoes, etc. It just takes longer to grow and be ready for harvest.

How about trying to remove a large expanding wild blackberry bush because it is causing a fire threat on your private property and starting to fill in your front yard? The CDF says keep a defensible space. Remove wild blackberry---no problem--until the Fish and Game comes onto your dprivate property and fines you $7000 for tampering with bird habitat. I can go on and on.
Before the fires are out, I will find various websites for you all to get a glimpse of the radical enviros out there. BTW- TED TURNER is one of their biggest contributors. First his wife is a commie supporting babe, and then he supports the goofies who want us moved off the land into very tight cities. Be prepared to read some of it more than once to really digest it. I had to.

Running Springs is a canyon town on the way to Big Bear. Because it seems so canyon-like there, I would not be surprised if a fire would whip through it. I haven't heard exactly what is going on there but I believe it is where the film crews were filming last night.

California Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) meets with Energy Secretary Spenseer Abraham, right, at the Department of Energy (news - web sites) headquarters in Washington Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003. Schwarzenegger used his first visit to Washington since his Oct. 7 election to plead for additional federal resources to fight what authorities are calling the worst fire emergency in the state in more than a decade. The important parts of Bambi will be saved in the freezer.

Not necessarily. An earlier post said that the village system was very old and didn't have alot of pressure. I think it was a village near lake arrowhead.

Thanks for that info.

They're taking a drive to Pt. Loma/San Diego for a college visit on Friday (and visiting UCLA while they're there), and I thought from the maps of the fires that it was clear in those areas, but really appreciate the specifics.

My prayers are with you all.
