Wildfire forces evacuations in Colorado mountains
By Associated Press

A wildfire roaring through tinder-dry forests in the Colorado mountains exploded to at least 400 acres early Wednesday afternoon, forcing hundreds of people to flee the foothills northwest of Boulder.
Fanned by winds of up to 50 mph, the fire burned through pine-covered hillsides 10 miles northwest of Booulder. A vast plume of white and gray smoke spread across the plains and settled over the city itself, where many residents were told to flee the flames.
The fire grew from 30 acres to between 400 and 500 acres in a matter of just a few hours, Boulder County sheriff's officials said. Witnesses said the flames were leaping at least 100 feet into the air.
No injuries have been reported.
The fire near tiny Jamestown was growing and threatening several homes and structures at a Denver Public Schools outdoor education center, sheriff's officials said.
In Jamestown, authorities sounded fire sirens shortly before noon and sheriff's Deputy Ed Zamora drove the streets with a loudspeaker, telling all 200 residents the evacuation was mandatory. Some residents wept as they left.
About 65 firefighters and commanders were at the scene and more were on the way, Boulder County sheriff's Lt. Phil West said. The cause of the blaze wasn't immediately known.
A Jamestown elementary school was designated as an evacuation center, but after the town was emptied officials set up shelters in Boulder.
About 70 people, including 58 fifth-graders from Denver Public Schools on an overnight trip at the Balarat Outdoor Education Center, were driven out of the area, Balarat spokesman Patrick Emery said.
He said the fire started about a mile from the center's front gate, or nearly two miles from any structures at the center. He said none of the structures was threatened.
Agencies in the area are low on firefighters and equipment because many have been sent to California to help firefighters there, said Bruce Mygatt, fire chief of the Boulder Rural Fire Protection District.
``We're not dangerously low, but we are low on personnel and smaller truck apparatus for these type of fires,'' he said. ``For now, they seem to have ample resources up there.''

I'm glad to hear that. Is the smoke bad in your area.

These enviro dummies need to wake up and smell the smoke! I don't know how many states need to burn to the ground before they come to their senses.

We had some controlled burns in our area the other day because there is just so much dead foliage everywhere. If a fire were to start, I'm sure it'd take no time at all until a good majority of this town were up in flames.

FFs are getting killed because pencilneck paper pushers can't get their act together and let men do their job right and with the needed equipment (ie water dropping helos).
