Little out as Red Sox Manager
ESPN TICKER ^

The Boston Red Sox, still smarting from a bitter seven-game loss to the rival Yankees in the ALCS, fired manager Grady Little on Monday, a high-ranking team official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
ESPN's Peter Gammons, who reported earlier Monday that Little would be fired Monday, reports that the team will formally announce the move at a 3 p.m. ET news conference at Fenway Park.
Monday's Boston Herald, citing a Red Sox source, reported that two candidates to succeed Little could be former Indians manager Charlie Manuel and former Red Sox second baseman Jerry Remy, a television analyst for NESN, a regional sports network partly owned by the Red Sox.
According to the report, others on the Red Sox list are Yankees third-base coach Willie Randolph, Yankees first-base coach Lee Mazzilli, Dodgers third-base coach Glenn Hoffman and former Phillies skipper Terry Francona, now the A's bench coach.

I like Remy too, but he shouldn't be Red Sox manager for a couple of reasons. One, Buck Martinez was a brilliant TV analyst as well, and literally sucked at the Blue Jays post. Second, Remy's departure from NESN would severely hurt NESN's viewership. And, as much as he would like to, Remy won't be able to sell bobble heads and T-shirts from the Red Sox dug-out.

I would take Bucky Dent in a heartbeat!

Figure he'd be worth it to some other group that wants to win 93-95 games. Going to be fascinating to see how this comes back to haunt them.
People said the same thing about Jimy Williams. Amazingly, they managed to come back in that situation.

Bad move.
Yankees first-base coach Lee Mazzilli...
Wasn't Lee Mazzilli one of the 1986 Mets who helped delivered the death blow to the Red Sox in game 6 of the Series?

I think the manager also asks the catcher's opinion. Does anyone know what - if anything - Varitek said?
More times than not, a catcher will agree with his pitcher. That's why there's a manager. The problem, however, was that the manager agreed with both of them. Hence, a players manager.

Pedro is a 7 inning pitcherHeck....they're all 7 innings pitchers anymore.
I did some quickie calculations one year when Clemens was with the Sox and..even then...he makinga bout $1500 A PITCH.
Whatever happened to arms like Warren Spahn..382 complete games or Bob Feller, 279 or Marichal, Neikro, Carlton, Gibson et al who never made $17 mil in their lifetimes.
It is a joke these days to see some limp wrist getting a Cy Young (749 CGs) award.

Not all of them, the Big unit is a complete game pitcher. Beckett on the Marlins is rapidly developing into a complete game pitcher (two complete game shutouts in their run, one a two hitter with a walk and one a 5 hitter... watch out for this kid).
I'm with you though, the skill in pitching has dropped. Remember when being a good pitcher meant having 4 or 5 solid pitches? Now a slider and a "fastball" (which now often means a pitch with no interesting spin) will get you 6 million bucks.

You obviously are not a SOX FAN. He was fired for many other things besides leaving Pedro martinez too long. He was loved by his players, but made a lot of stupid decisions that defied logic. I thought they should have kept him because the players were happy and overall played very well.
Wait til next year !!

"This guy won 93-95 games for them each year, and took them to the ALCs this year." The Red Sox won 93 & 95 games respectively, inspite of Grady Little's puzzling maneuvers, not because of him. The Sox had the best hitting team since the 1927 Yankees this year, and their defense at every position ranged from adequate to excellent. They also had three very good starters in Martinez, Lowe and Wakefield. The bullpen that they acquired during the year were shining stars in the post season, and the Red Sox should have won 105 games this year, not 95. All Grady Little did was to destroy the confidence of B K Kim by yanking him after getting two out in the 9th against New York at the season's end, and never using him again. Grady Little has the mentality and strategic ability of a mediocre minor league manager. Good riddence to him.

ya think? but seriously the red sox need to stop trying to please pedro all the time. He is one of the reasons Jimy Williams got canned. Not to mention bringing on his brother Ramone with the jellyfish arm just to please Pedro. He makes 17 million a year He should just shut and pitch. I think Grady Little kept Pedro in because he was afraid not to, simply because of all the power Pedro has with the Sox. If he had taken Pedro out earlier, and somebody in the Sox bullpen had given up the tying run to the Yankees, Grady would have gotten in trouble for not trusting his star pitcher. He really couldn't win in this situation.

I think grady was wrong to have him even start the eighth inning Timlin dominated the yanks all series.

While many ask Buckner why he was still in the game, in South Alabama Dave Stapleton frequently gets asked why he wasn't.
I'm sure Dave reruns that play as much as anyone.

Say it aint so. Especially not Willie R. Maybe they'll take Zim back since he's looking for a new job.
To: expatpat
He'll probably go to the Orioles.
Or the cubs. Either way we'll not have to put up with his annoying lisp.
To: rs79bm
Jerry Remy? I dunno. The last time the Sox had a former Boston infielder as manager, he turned out to be a cocaine addict (Butch Hobson).

The only announcer that has done well out of the video booth is Bob Brenly. But then again, if Remy is a serious candidate, which I highly question at this point, the salary would be hard to pass up. I just don't think the Sox brass wants somebody in there with zero managerial experience.

The only consolation I am able to take from that series is that the team didn't lose the game, grady Little did. Glad he's gone.
