.......I'm wondering if there's a way through Desert Hot Springs???? I just can't remember.

From DHS, one can go up the highway toward Twentynine Palms and turn back on 247 ("Old Womyn Springs Road")...taken thru Landers and towards Lucerne Valley, there's a backside road that goes right up there. I've never taken it, but on the Hwy 247 side there is sure as hell nothing burnable - all desert!
