May the Lord have mercy on us all! Your post makes me even angrier at the media for not reporting this as a national disaster -- lots of people around the country would want to pray for y'all.

can they fly at night?

My guess would be that it would be very difficult to maneuver around the mountainous areas when considering the darkness and the smoke, unless they can drop from higher altitudes. I really don't know.

Thanks for answering! I didn't consider it being a wiseacre -- I was just curious because I heard one of the reporters say that the fire could burn down the mountainside and I wasn't sure about that.

USAF C130s have been out for a couple of hours. I watched those on MSNBC too.

It sounds like a lot is happening without word getting out - I didn't know that they were flying, but I'm glad that they are.

Lake Arrowhead update on KCAL
5:20 PM
Fire down in "gorge with glow over rim"

Phoschek laid down below Hwy 18

Santa Ana winds were working to the advantage of the fire fighting at the top of the mountain.

Santa Ana winds are gone.

I used to live on Argonne Street in Clairemont Mesa. Our street was about 2 blocks from San Clemente Canyon -- hubby used to take the dogs there to run -- but I always worried about how vulnerable we would be in case of a fire.

Santa Ana winds are gone.

That's fortunate for those southwest, but not for Arrowhead. The fire will burn up the hill on its own convective wind. I wonder how far it is and how fast it can move...

Gumby was interviewed exclusively on KCBS, KCAL and now he's on KNBC.

Check my #1281 or nicmarlos' #1056.

It's easy for me to think ALF ELF involvement in this instance,at least. It's nearly "too" easy.

The reporter could not believe that four families were still in that development. That is just plain stupid and causes a problem for law enforcement and fire fighters.

The etiquette on live threads was to stay short & sweet, I thought, especially when everyone's responding quickly.

When you run across a quote from CA local leaders who went on record blaming the Bush administration for the fires on Monday 10/27, please ping me. I'd like to read it.

Fire CAN burn downhill under some conditions. I've seen it do so at night when the humidity was very low. During the day, the air flows upslope, kind of like a chimney effect. At night, the process reverses as the air cools. Normally, as the air cools, the humidity rises, and the fire will "lay down" at night, so you won't see it burning too actively. However, under very dry conditions, it can burn downhill.
